Here’s Why You Might Be an Electric Car Owner a Decade from Now.

It’s been five years since the first mainstream electric cars went on sale, yet the market remains tiny, with just 115,000 sales in the U.S. in 2015. The top seller was the high-end carmaker Tesla, which will unveil a new $35,000 car this week with the hopes of reaching a more mainstream market (see “Tesla’s Cheaper Model 3 Could Strain Charging Infrastructure”).

With the price of gasoline hovering below $2 a gallon, it might seem that Tesla CEO Elon Musk will struggle to reach the masses. But there are signs the mainstream buyer could soon become more open to plugging in, even if oil prices remain depressed.

The head of Apple’s electric car project is reportedly leaving the company.

Apple’s Steve Zadesky, who has been overseeing the company’s electric car project for the last two years, has said he is leaving the company, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Zadesky, who previously worked with the iPod and iPhone teams, is leaving for personal reasons not related to his performance, the WSJ said.

It was not clear when the 16-year veteran would leave Apple, the Journal said. As of Friday afternoon his profile on LinkedIn still listed him as working at Apple.

Apple declined to comment.

Nissan wants to bring wireless charging technology to electric cars.

Electric car owners get to enjoy a certain level of pride in saying that they never have to deal with gas stations and dirty fuel-filler nozzles.

Most of those owners would likely agree that not having to deal with cords and charging ports would be another great step forward, however.

Soon, if Nissan and several other automakers have their way, that day will come, as wireless (inductive) charging systems and smart charging controls will take away that “hands on” obligation—provided you park in designated charging spots.

The Taiwanese tech titan unveiled the eATV “X Terran” (presumably that’s not meant to be ‘Terrain’) prototype at the  eCarTech conference in Munich last week, but the company didn’t reveal too many details. We have, however, now obtained some photos of what the vehicle looks like.

Apple’s race for electric car talent leaves one motorcycle startup in the doldrums.

Apple Inc’s aggressive recruitment of auto experts as it explores building a car has left a promising, if financially troubled, electric motorcycle startup in the dust.

Mission Motors, whose sleek electric bikes drew comparisons to Tesla’s cars, ceased operations in May after losing some of its top engineering talent to Apple, according to sources close to Mission.

Although it has never openly acknowledged it is looking into building an electric car, Apple has recruited dozens of auto experts, many from car makers like Ford or Mercedes-Benz, which shrugged off the departures.

Tesla finally unveils the Model X, starting at $132K.

Originally scheduled to launch back in 2013, Tesla’s all-new Model X crossover sport utility vehicle (SUV) was unveiled at an event in California late Tuesday. The vehicle starts at $132,000 and goes up to $142,000 — making it more expensive than top-line Model S sedans. It marks the first entirely new car Tesla has launched in three years, and its third car to date (the Model S and Roadster being the first two).
