StoreDot promises electric car that charges in 5 minutes

At last year’s Microsoft ThinkNext event in Tel Aviv, where new technologies by several Israeli start-ups go on display and get their “big break,” Dr. Doron Myersdorf, CEO of Israeli start-up StoreDot, wowed the crowd by promising within a year to develop a technology that could reduce the time needed to recharge cellphones from hours to minutes.

At ThinkNext 2015 Tuesday in Tel Aviv, Myersdorf, fulfilled that promise, displaying before a crowd of some 1,500 a phone as it recharged from zero power to 100% charged in about two minutes.

And while he was doing that, Myersdorf made another promise: “Next year, we will present a technology to recharge an electric car in five minutes.”

Inexpensive Electric Cars May Arrive Sooner Than You Think.

The true cost of lithium-ion batteries in electric cars is a secret closely held by manufacturers. And estimates of the cost vary widely, making it tough to determine just how much lower they must go before electric vehicles with long ranges can be affordable for most buyers. But a peer-reviewed study of more than 80 estimates reported between 2007 and 2014 determined that the costs of battery packs are “much lower” than widely assumed by energy-policy analysts.

Electric cars could cut oil imports 40% by 2030, says study.

Electric cars could cut the UK’s oil imports by 40% and reduce drivers’ fuel bills by £13bn if deployed on a large scale, according to a new study.

An electric vehicle surge would deliver an average £1,000 of fuel savings a year per driver, and spark a 47% drop in carbon emissions by 2030, said the Cambridge Econometrics study.
