Recycling industry under pressure from falling raw material prices.

Businesses are abandoning recycled materials in favour of cheaper virgin materials. The French recycling industry's profits fell by 2% in 2014. EurActiv France reports

Only one third of EU's e-waste recycled properly.

More than two thirds of metal appliances and tech products that are thrown away in the EU are processed illegally and some leak toxins into the environment that can have dangerous health effects. Researchers said Europe has an electronic waste problem.

Almost five million tonnes of e-waste were mismanaged or traded under the table within the EU in 2012, and 1.3 tonnes were illegally exported out of the EU, mostly to Africa and Asia.

Only one third of Europe's e-waste is properly recycled.

Europe fails on electronics recycling goals.

Only a third of Europe’s electronic waste is properly recycled, with vast numbers of cellphones, computers and televisions illegally traded or dumped, a study led by the United Nations and INTERPOL said on Sunday.

Sweden and Norway were close to European targets of collecting and recycling 85 percent of all electrical and electronic waste, at the top of a ranking in which Romania, Spain and Cyprus were bottom with less than 20 percent, it said.

European rules demand recycling of “e-waste”, products with a plug or a battery, to recover metals such as gold or silver and avoid release of toxins such as lead or mercury.
