Single-Dose Cures for Malaria, Other Diseases.

One of the world’s preëminent biomedical researchers is calling for a concerted effort by scientists to develop pills that would stay in the stomach or gut for weeks or months once swallowed, delivering one or more drugs continuously or over set intervals.

Such “super pills” would greatly simplify the treatment of diseases such as malaria. They could address a major concern in medicine, says MIT professor Robert Langer: the fact that many people don’t take all their drugs, especially when undergoing long-term treatment.

Glooko Gets $16M Injection to Upgrade Digital Diabetes Product.

Digital health firm Glooko has a new round of cash to expand its diabetes management product, but it’s not ready to say how much the product is actually helping diabetics.

The Palo Alto, CA-based company has raised a $16.5 million Series B round, led by Canaan Partners. With the cash, Glooko will add more ways to feed data into its product, which lets diabetics download personal and medical information from their health devices to a smart phone, and then share the data with doctors and insurers.

Norwest, Kaiser, and others bet a fresh $70M on Health Catalyst’s analytics platform.

Health data analytics firms have come into vogue as health care providers struggle to reduce costs in the face of declining Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. Many of these firms have proved to be attractive venture investment targets, and Salt Lake City-based Health Catalyst is a good example. The company has just pulled in a new $70 million round, bringing its investment total to somewhere around $170 million.

For Medical Adhesive Revolution, a German-born biotech company, Houston has been good for business.

Last year, the company won the prestigious Rice University Business Plan Competition, becoming the first foreign company to do so. And this month, the biotech has officially moved its headquarters and its president, Alexander Schueller, to Houston where the company will join 21 other startups   at the Texas Medical Center’s new accelerator, TMCx.
