EU in new push to revive the carbon market.

EU diplomats today (8 November) agreed to begin talks on a legal text to slash permit supply and prop up carbon prices in the bloc's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), marking a big step forward for the divisive proposal.

EU president Lithuania said member state officials would start negotiations with the European Parliament and the executive European Commission over the "backloading" plan, which seeks to delay the sale of 900 million carbon permits until later this decade.

Researchers give urine-powered robot new 'heart'

Fully autonomous robots that collect human urine to power themselves could be a step closer, according to researchers in Bristol.

The engineers from the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) have created a pump based on a human heart that can deliver urine to the fuel cells of the waste-powered “EcoBot”, without the risk of mechanical failures and blockages experienced by current technology.

This could enable the robots to operate without human intervention because they it would allow them to collect their own fuel and use it to generate electricity, the researchers claim.

If We Can Bury Carbon Dioxide, Why Not Use It to Make Electricity.

Researchers might have found a way to economically capture carbon dioxide from power plants and store it underground. The idea is to turn carbon dioxide storage sites into geothermal power plants.

If it works, the technology would provide both the electricity needed to pump carbon dioxide underground and a source of revenue to offset the high cost of capturing carbon dioxide at power plants, compressing it, and shipping it to storage sites.

For Tesla Motors, Success Is All About the Batteries.

Most of the news coverage of the Tesla Motors earnings call last night focused on how the company’s stock fell, in spite of the fact that Tesla is on track to meet its sales and margins goals. But in terms of the long term success of the company, a more important part of the call was CEO Elon Musk’s comments about batteries.

A New Solar Material Shows Its Potential.

A new solar cell material has properties that might lead to solar cells more than twice as efficient as the best on the market today. An article this week in the journal Nature describes the materials—a modified form of a class of compounds called perovskites, which have a particular crystalline structure.

The researchers haven’t yet demonstrated a high efficiency solar cell with the material. But their work adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting perovskite materials could change the face of solar power. Researchers are making new perovskites using combinations of elements and molecules not seen in nature; many researchers see the materials as the next great hope for making solar power cheap enough to compete with fossil fuels.
