When designing the Tesla Model S, Elon Musk wanted an electric motor that had the same horsepower as the most powerful internal combustion engine but with nearly-instantaneous torque. And he wanted it to be the size of a watermelon. Engine manufacturers told him this couldn’t be done. So the Tesla CEO decided to build his own motor. The earlier versions of this had a hand-wound stator which increased winding density to help eliminate resistance and increase peak torque. Later versions of the stators were built by robots.

Bioinformatics Startup Recombine Raises $3.3M For Genetic Testing.

Recombine, a bioinformatics startup out of New York, has just raised $3.3 million to conduct carrier screening for expectant parents. The round was led by FirstMark Capital.

Recombine is part of a new wave of startups that marry computer science with the wealth of data that is emerging out of ultra-low-cost sequencing.

EU must break rising diabetes curve, experts say.

Around 32 million people in the EU have diabetes and the number is growing. The curve for the chronic disease must be broken as it has not only great economic consequences, but also generates social inequality, experts stress.

Around 9.3% of the total health budget of the EU is spent on diabetes, a chronic disease linked to heart disease and stroke.

Speaking at a conference organised by the European Diabetes Leadership Forum on Tuesday (4 March), Health Commissioner Tonio Borg stressed the importance of prevention to fight the disease.
