Artificial Intelligence Startup Vicarious Grabs Funding From Bezos, Benioff And Jerry Yang.

After Mark Zuckerberg, Peter Thiel and other Silicon Valley notables plunked down capital in a $40 million growth round for San Francisco-based artificial intelligence startup Vicarious, a few more billionaires showed up.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, Skype co-founder Janus Friis and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff all showed up to give Vicarious an additional shot of capital in its Series B round.

A Satellite Startup Could Be Google’s Next Purchase.

According to a report, Google is interested in buying Skybox Imaging, a California-based startup that builds high-resolution imaging microsatellites and provides a platform to view the data. Because apparently Google needs satellites now that Facebook has drones.

As The Information states, the purchase would line up nicely with Google’s mapping ambitions. Skybox Imaging’s microsatellites would provide Google with its own fleet of cameras in the sky, allowing the search giant to capture its own imaging for Google Earth.

A Broken Place: The Spectacular Failure Of The Startup That Was Going To Change The World.

With almost $1 billion in funding and ambitions to replace petroleum-based cars with a network of cheap electrics, Shai Agassi’s Better Place was remarkable even by the standards of world-changing startups. So was its epic failure. A 21st-century cautionary tale.

"So this is the car." I'm standing outside a shopping mall somewhere in Tel Aviv, Israel, as Guy Pross shows me his ride.

Vengo Labs Raises $2M To Take Its Digital Ad/Mini Vending Machines Beyond NYC.

As some aspects of the tech industry continue to mature, others are putting efforts into ways of using tech to disrupt decidedly non-tech businesses. In one of the latest developments on this front, Vengo Labs, NYC-based makers of mini vending machines selling everything from chewing gum to mini speakers, which also doubles as an ad network, have raised $2 million in funding to expand their business to new markets.

What It's Like Working At A Red-Hot Big Data Startup.

Worldwide IT spending is expected to increase this year, but it's nothing compared to how much money will flow into Big Data. And for employees at those companies, more money is certainly a good thing.

As a new IDC report reveals, spending in the Big Data market will reach $32.4 billion by 2017, or nearly six times the growth rate of the overall IT market.

Cheaper Joints and Digits Bring the Robot Revolution Closer.

The Atlas humanoid robot, unveiled last year by Boston Dynamics, a company later acquired by Google, is a marvel. It can clamber over rubble and operate power tools. But these abilities don’t come cheap. Atlas has a price tag well above a million dollars, and it consumes around 15 kilowatts of electricity when in operation, meaning hefty power bills for its owner and limiting its practicality. “That’s enough to power a small city block,” says Alexander Kernbaum, research engineer at the nonprofit research agency SRI International. To be truly practical, he says, Atlas “needs to be many times more efficient.”

U.K. Startup SkillFlick Opens Its Doors As A Marketplace For Local Services — Starting In London.

SkillFlick is a U.K. startup with the self-described aim of building an ’Airbnb for local skills’. The site was founded two years ago, launching in beta in January 2013 and is just opening up fully to the public this month. It’s bootstrapped and is actively looking to raise a seed round now. TC last came across the startup pitching at our London meet-up back in July, when we described it as as an ‘Amazon marketplace but for local services’.
