BlackEnergy crimeware coursing through US control systems,

Industrial control systems in the United States have been compromised by the BlackEnergy malware toolkit for at least three years in a campaign the US Computer Emergency Response Team has dubbed "ongoing" and sophisticated. Attackers had compromised unnamed industrial control system operators and implanted BlackEnergy on internet-facing human-machine interfaces including those from GE Cimplicity, Advantech/Broadwin WebAccess, and Siemens WinCC. The latter system was often used by large plant operators including Iran's Natanz uranium facility at the time it was hosed by Stuxnet, however the latest attacks targeting the platform are suspected but not confirmed.

Led by Boeing Vet, Tempered Networks Securing the Internet of Things.

Here’s a scary headline: “BlackEnergy crimeware coursing through US control systems.” That’s from a report on a security vulnerability discovered in the Internet-connected pieces of industrial infrastructure that control things like electricity generation and water systems. A Seattle startup says its technology, first developed to help secure robotic tooling on Boeing’s 777 assembly lines, can help. Tempered Networks is relying on a little-used networking protocol to “orchestrate” components of industrial systems and limit communication to trusted entities only, said former Boeing network security expert David Mattes, who co-founded the company with F5 Networks founder Jeff Hussey.

The Core Incompetencies of the Corporation.

Large organizations of all types suffer from an assortment of congenital disabilities that no amount of incremental therapy can cure. First, they are inertial. They are frequently caught out by the future and seldom change in the absence of a crisis. Deep change, when it happens, is belated and convulsive, and typically requires an overhaul of the leadership team. Absent the bloodshed, the dynamics of change in the world’s largest companies aren’t much different from what one sees in a poorly-governed, authoritarian regime – and for the same reason: there are few, if any, mechanisms that facilitate proactive bottom-up renewal.

Cloud provider Joyent bets the farm on containers, adds $15M.

Joyent, a provider of public-cloud infrastructure and software that companies can use to create clouds in their own data centers, is announcing today that it’s brought in $15 million in new funding.

The deal shows investors believe there’s still room for cloud providers other than the big three — Amazon, Google, and Microsoft — even as they become more and more appealing to companies with new features and price cuts. But the new funding also points to the wisdom of the low-level technology Joyent has long used to run multiple applications efficiently on each physical server.

Denmark wants to be coal-free by 2025.

Denmark is looking into how the country can stop using coal as an energy supply by 2025, the Climate and Energy Minister Rasmus Helveg Petersen said on Wednesday (29 October). The Scandinavian country's centre-left government had previously aimed at being coal-independent by 2030.

Petersen said he has asked government officials to look into what Denmark can do in order to phase out the use of coal already in ten years time.

A road map to the future for the auto industry.

Automakers took center stage at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. General Motors exhibited the Firebird IV concept car, which, as the company explained, “anticipates the day when the family will drive to the super-highway, turn over the car’s controls to an automatic, programmed guidance system and travel in comfort and absolute safety at more than twice the speed possible on today’s expressways.”1 Ford, by contrast, introduced a vehicle for the more immediate
