A Smartphone Eye Exam Service Launches in New York.

Your next eye exam could be done with gadgets that connect to a smartphone and fit into a small suitcase—and there may not be a doctor or optometrist in the room.

A service called Blink is launching today in New York that will bring an eye exam to your home or office for $75, administered by a technician who uses a trio of handheld devices that take the place of the bulky autorefractor, lensmeter, and phoropter you may have seen in an eye doctor’s office. The technician will send the results to an optometrist, who will write a prescription if necessary and e-mail it to you (in the U.S., only ophthalmologists and optometrists can legally write eyeglass prescriptions).

Security Experts Hack Teleoperated Surgical Robot.

A crucial bottleneck that prevents life-saving surgery being performed in many parts of the world is the lack of trained surgeons. One way to get around this is to make better use of the ones that are available.

Sending them over great distances to perform operations is clearly inefficient because of the time that has to be spent travelling. So an increasingly important alternative is the possibility of telesurgery with an expert in one place controlling a robot in another that physically performs the necessary cutting and dicing. Indeed, the sale of medical robots is increasing at a rate of 20 percent per year.

Apple and IBM’s Plan to Make Smarter Health-Tracking iPhone Apps.

Apple’s vision for tracking your health via an iPhone is expanding.

Some hospitals and electronic medical records companies have already begun using an Apple software platform called HealthKit to add extra detail to patient files. For example, patients can opt to automatically share readings from a home blood glucose monitor with their provider using the software. Apple and IBM are now working together to help health-care providers make sense of that data, and to do things like automatically offer advice to patients.

MIT invention makes ocean water drinkable with a little help from the sun.

From plants to people, every living thing on this planet needs water. But getting enough to survive, and survive comfortably, that can be a little tricky. Just look at the furor around California's new water restrictions. If a state as wealthy as California is having to get creative in order to start saving water, you can bet that governments and municipalities with less money and clout are having to turn to even more inventive methods to get clean water without breaking the bank.
