Nervana Systems, one startup building artificial intelligence systems that companies can use to make their applications smarter, announced today a $20.5 million round of funding.
The startup specializes in a type of AI called deep learning, which involves feeding lots of data to artificial neural networks and then throwing new data at them to receive inferences in response. Researchers developed the technique decades ago; and it’s since waxed and waned in popularity. Thanks to improvements in computing power and the availability of large sets of data, the technique has become popular for processing images, videos, text, and speech.

El Grupo Volkswagen recibió ayer la mayor multa impuesta jamás a una red de concesionarios en España. La Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC) ha sancionado a unos 107 concesionarios en toda España de las enseñas Volkswagen, Audi y Seat con 40 millones de euros de multa por la realización de prácticas anticompetitivas constitutivas de un delito de cártel. En concreto, se les condena por realizar acuerdos de fijación de precios y otras condiciones comerciales y por intercambiar información comercial sensible.
La carne de Campofrío será totalmente mexicana. La empresa española contará ya con un capital controlado al 100% por la mexicana Sigma tras comprar la participación de WH Group, que mantenía el 37% del grupo cárnico propietario de Revilla, Oscar Mayer o Navidul.
La operación, valorada en 354 millones de euros (311 millones de euros), se realiza a través de Alfa, la matriz del grupo Sigma Alimentación. Según explica la empresa española, Alfa "mantendrá su participación en esta empresa de forma temporal" para posteriormente venderla a su filial. Con este acuerdo, controlan directa o indirectamente el 100% de las acciones de Campofrio.
Israeli medical experts have developed a wearable mobile monitor to keep a close watch on pregnant women and their fetuses as they go about their everyday lives.
The PregSense monitor has sensors woven into an elastic harness to provide data around the clock on the status of the fetus and the mother's health in the later stages of pregnancy.
A bluetooth-enabled device attached to the monitor collects and transmits data such as the mother and baby's heart rates to a smartphone and stores it on a secure cloud-based database accessible only to expectant mothers and their physicians.
Clinical trials of a new drug cocktail have been shown to cure 58 percent of terminally-ill patients by shrinking cancerous tumors or eliminating them altogether. The scientific community is hailing this discovery as a major breakthrough in cancer research.
The new cocktail is a form of immunotherapy, a relatively new class of drugs that harness the body’s immune system to extinguish fatal tumors. Israeli researcher Prof. Jacob Schachter, who took part in the development of the drug and in the recent clinical trials, told Israel’s Channel 10 that the newfound drug cocktail could serve as the basis of treatment for many types of cancer, potentially replacing chemotherapy. “It’s an explosion,” he said.
