17 Hot industries to watch in 2013

he smartest entrepreneurs don’t emulate trends — they set them. In 2013, with both rapid technological advances (NFC, anyone?) and policy changes on the horizon, startup founders are looking ahead to figure out how, and where, to position their offerings so they can see the biggest wins.

Specifically, they’re looking to capitalize on emerging industries and technologies that will shape the way we do business in the future.

We asked members of the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an invitation-only nonprofit organization comprised of the country’s most promising young entrepreneurs, the following question to find out where, in 2013, the biggest opportunities can be found:

Knowledge and data will become the health system's vital currency.

Big data has been big news in 2012. This year has seen a plethora of new apps, platforms and sensors that help create and capture more data about many aspects of our lives - from fitness and diet to energy consumption and retail. Advances in computer science and digital tools are rapidly improving our ability to analyse a greater volume, variety and velocity of data. Culturally, the shift towards much greater openness has had a significant impact on the public sector with more and more agencies opening up their data sets. Research shows that businesses are increasingly using data analytics to guide their innovation strategies.

Pulse of the industry, Ernst & Young’s fifth annual report on the state of the medical technology industry.

Over the last couple of years, we have written about medtech’s “new normal,” an environment in which funding constraints, pricing pressures, comparative effectiveness research and other trends have put innovation under unprecedented strain. But many of these developments are merely manifestations of a larger trend: the need to make health care costs sustainable and the concomitant realignment of incentives around health outcomes. A range of patient-empowering, information-leveraging technologies (PI technologies) — which are blurring the lines between medical devices/diagnostics and health IT — have the potential to make health care delivery vastly more efficient and disrupt much of the medtech industry in the process.

Manufacturing the future: The next era of global growth and innovation.

The global manufacturing sector has undergone a tumultuous decade: large developing economies leaped into the first tier of manufacturing nations, a severe recession choked off demand, and manufacturing employment fell at an accelerated rate in advanced economies. Still, manufacturing remains critically important to both the developing and the advanced world. In the former, it continues to provide a pathway from subsistence agriculture to rising incomes and living standards. In the latter, it remains a vital source of innovation and competitiveness, making outsized contributions to research and development, exports, and productivity growth.
