Silicon Valley hardware startup Kateeva raises $38M for flexible displays.

Kateeva has raised $38 million to build flexible displays using its inkjet printing technology. Its technology could lead to bright and thin TVs with curved and bendable screens.

Fundings for hardware startups are rare in Silicon Valley. But Kateeva is an exception thanks to its patented technology that has been in development for years.

The fourth round of funding included new investor Samsung Venture Investment Corp. (SVIC). Other existing investors participating in the round are Sigma Partners, Spark Capital, Madrone Capital, Partners, DBL Investors, New Science Ventures, and Veeco Instruments.

dyn, which debuted on-stage at TechCrunch Disrupt a year ago with a slightly jankier cubical prototype of a Internet-connected garden sensor, is back with sleeker model and a partnership to sell them in Home Depot next spring.

The startup’s system, which comes with a soil sensor that can tell you pH, humidity, temperature, soil nutrition and moisture and an automated water valve, helps gardeners figure out how to precisely care for their plants. A paired app lets users see recommendations on which plants to use given their garden’s conditions.

Personal assistant service Alfred wins TechCrunch’s Startup Battlefield contest.

A group of venture capital and tech company execs chose Alfred as the winner of TechCrunch’s “Startup Battlefield” contest here at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference.

Alfred is a subscription-based service that provides people to do basic tasks for you, like picking up dry cleaning, doing laundry, getting groceries, going to the pharmacy, cleaning the house, and a lot of other tedious and/or time consuming tasks.

The service might also subcontract with services like Washio (for laundry), Task Rabbit (for random tasks), or Instacart (for groceries).

The company has already been running trials of its program in six universities, starting this spring, and now claims to reach 40,000 students across the U.S. who use it as a platform for social, peer-to-peer learning.

Civic minded social network MindMixer gets $17M to connect communities.

Kansas-based startup MindMixer just grabbed $17 million to better connect companies and governments with community members, consumers, and clients.

MindMixer is social-good tech. It is civic minded social networking, focused on connecting community organizations to one another and to the communities they serve to help projects get off the ground. Organizations can post ideas about community improvement projects, like the addition of bike racks in a downtown area, and community members can weigh in. The company hopes to make communication between local non-profits, government organizations, and community members more fluid.
