CogBooks raises $2.8M to for more adaptive, individualized education

Ed tech business CogBooks has raised $2.8 million (£1.75 million) to bring adaptive learning to the masses.

The Edinburgh-based platform personalizes learning on a student-by-student basis in real time in order to improve learning outcomes and retention. It is mostly used by higher-education institutions and for corporate training.

The investment has been led by Nesta Impact Investments, DC Thomson Ventures and Scottish Investment Bank.

Language Learning Platform Fluentify Takes In $410K Angel Investment.

Fluentify, a London-based videoconferencing language learning platform founded last year, has closed a $410,000 angel investment, led by Stefano Marsaglia, former chairman of Barclays global financial institutions group and current co-head of Mediobanca investment bank.

The new funding brings the startup’s total raised to date to $500,000.

The webcam-based language learning marketplace, which aims to connects people who want to brush up their skills in a particular language with native speakers from around the world, allows any native speaker to become a ‘fluentifier’ language tutor — provided they pass its vetting procedure.

Just a Month After Google Capital Funding, Renaissance Learning Sells for $1.1 Billion.

Google Capital valued Renaissance Learning at $1 billion when it put $40 million into the educational assessment company in mid-February. Just a month later, Renaissance Learning is worth $1.1 billion — to new owner Hellman & Friedman, which bought the company on Monday and is announcing the deal today.

Essentially, Renaissance is being traded from one private equity firm to another.

Previously, Permira had taken the 30-year-old ed-tech player off of the public markets in 2011 by buying it for $455 million.

HarvardX and MITx are collaborative institutional efforts between Harvard University and MIT to enhance campus-based education, advance educational research, and increase access to online learning opportunities worldwide. Over the year from the fall of 2012 to the summer of 2013, HarvardX and MITx launched 17 courses on edX, a jointly founded platform for delivering massive open online courses (MOOCs). In that year, 43,196 registrants earned certificates of completion. Another 35,937 registrants explored half or more of course content without certification. An additional 469,702 registrants viewed less than half of the content. And 292,852 registrants never engaged with the online content.
