Northvolt’s plan to build Europe’s largest lithium plant is two years delayed.

Europe’s largest lithium plant — a joint venture between battery maker Northvolt and Portuguese oil and gas giant Galp — is two years behind schedule.

Northvolt and Galp announced the 50-50 joint venture in 2021. It was originally aiming to process 52k tonnes of battery-ready lithium hydroxide a year, enough to produce the batteries needed to replace 650k combustion vehicles, annually, from 2026.

Measurement technology for the battery of tomorrow

Modern battery technologies play a central role in numerous fields of application, from electric vehicles and energy storage systems, to mobile devices such as smartphones. With the increasing focus on sustainability and electrification, the importance of batteries continues to grow. A high-precision production process is essential to meet this demand and to keep the quality, performance and cost-effectiveness of batteries at the highest level.

Hungary awards funding for 440 MW of storage

The Hungarian Ministry of Energy has announced that around 50 grid-scale energy storage projects with a cumulative capacity of 440 MW have received subsidy support through a tender launched in February this year.

The procurement exercise is part of a broader subsidy program to the tune of HUF 200 billion launched in a bid to support households and businesses to produce and store green energy.

Last Thursday, the government said that it has selected the winning bidders and allocated HUF 62 billion for their energy storage projects.

Fire-Resistant Sodium Battery Balances Safety, Cost and Performance

A sodium battery developed by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin significantly reduces fire risks from the technology, while also relying on inexpensive, abundant materials to serve as its building blocks.

Though battery fires are rare, increased battery usage means these incidents are on the rise.

10 Battery Technologies Currently In Development

As the electric vehicle technology continues to advance, batteries are becoming more crucial than ever. In the past decade, advances in battery technology have already enabled electric vehicles to travel further, charge faster, and become more affordable for consumers. Battery technology is rapidly evolving, with new and exciting developments around the corner.

5 New Battery Technologies That Will Change the Future

Your phone is about to go dead—again—and you can’t find a place to plug it in. Your laptop is getting hot…is the battery about to catch on fire? How far from home should you drive your electric vehicle? As scenarios like these become increasingly common, it’s clear that we need batteries that store more, last longer, and are safer to use. Fortunately, new battery technologies are coming our way.

Let’s take a look at a few:
