When Big Companies Fall, Entrepreneurship Rises!

When a whale dies, the 30-100 ton body — or “whale fall” — slowly, silently sinks to the ocean bottom where it becomes the wellspring of a complex new microcosm of seabed flora and fauna that can thrive for well over half a century. These new ecosystems with their hundreds of species from flesh-eating sharks to sulphur-metabolizing worms also include “innovative start-ups” — previously undiscovered new sea animals that have naturally selected to flourish in the unique ecosystem.

The Rise of the Mompreneur.

Working mothers who choose to start their own businesses represent a new and growing type of entrepreneur. They are motivated primarily by the desire to be available for their children, and they turned away from the corporate world because their former jobs lacked the opportunity for advancement or flexible scheduling.

French start-up and ACES 2013 Winner Qualisteo takes a new approach to measuring energy

It’s hard to save electricity when you don’t know where it’s going. Qualisteo’s Wattseeker reads the fingerprints of electrical systems to make monitoring energy use easier and less costly.

When it comes to saving energy across an industrial or commercial site, the first step is figuring out how much is being used – and where. But monitoring the energy consumption of every appliance or system across such sites is no small feat. Qualisteo, winner of the ACES Energy & Environment Award, set out to simplify that task by developing a device that could measure and control electricity use from a single location.

Lessons learned from the US experience with shale gas – take the time to get it right.

Rush to drill backfired. Industry and regulators need to be much more vigilant to avoid environmental damage and public backlash.

The rapid rise of hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking, has become hugely controversial on both sides of the Atlantic. The extraction of shale gas out of rock formations in the U.S. has been accompanied by both intensive use of fresh water and dramatically lowered energy prices. As a result of the environmental damage, environmentalists are up in arms, public opinion in much of Europe is against fracking and France has banned the process.
