Halving CO2 emissions by 2050: New report says it will cost $2 trillion a year.

A new report from Imperial College London looks at what measures are required to reduce CO2 emissions and limit the extent of man-made climate change.

Human activities like shipping, construction and industry are increasing the concentration of CO2 entering the atmosphere, which research has overwhelmingly shown is heating the planet and changing our climate.

Many studies, including those by the International Energy Agency, suggest that global CO2 emissions are set to pass 50 Giga-tonnes per year by 2050 if there is no further action by governments to reduce them over the coming years.

Inspired by nature: To maximise the efficiency of solar cells of the future, physicists are taking a leaf out of nature’s book.

Through billions of years of evolution, life on Earth has found intricate solutions to many of the problems scientists are currently grappling with. Physicists at the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory are trying to unravel nature’s secrets to develop new energy-generating technologies for a more sustainable future.

Focusing on the ancient green sulphur bacteria, research fellows Dr Alex Chin and Dr Nicholas Hine are investigating the early stages of photosynthesis – the process in which plants and some bacteria capture the sun’s light energy and convert it into chemical energy, or food.

The Rise of the Mompreneur.

They are motivated primarily by the desire to be available for their children, and they turned away from the corporate world because their former jobs lacked the opportunity for advancement or flexible scheduling.

The Power of Simplicity in mHealth.

“Technology is at its best and the most empowering when it simply disappears.” That is what Jony Ive, Apple’s chief designer said about the new iPhone 5S. Although many may argue whether the technologies used in iPhone 5S are truly the “best” and “most empowering,” Mr. Ive made a good point about the importance of keeping technology simple.

Two recent cases in the mobile health and public health area have suggested that simple and straightforward design can lead to impressive results.
