Connected car gadget company Zubie scores $10M.

We’ve seen plenty of gadgets try to make our cars smarter, but investors have apparently taken a liking to newcomer Zubie.

The Charleston, South Carolina-based company, which makes a $100 gadget that plugs into your car and sends updates to apps on your phone over cellular networks, announced today that it has raised $10 million in a first round of funding from Castrol InnoVentures, Comporium, and OpenAir Equity Partners.

Back in 2006, two enterpreneurs called Kraig Swensrud and Sean Whiteley started a business based around the idea that Salesforce could be used for more than just helping salespeople organise their accounts and targets. Kieden, as the startup was called, created an add-on for Salesforce that let users create and manage Google AdWords advertising campaigns, and in that same year, it was acquired by Salesforce itself, where the two held various roles and Swensrud eventually became the CMO. Now the pair have left the mothership to forge out into the startup world again.

Drone Gets Its Smarts from a Smartphone.

Researchers are using a smartphone as the brains behind a small, inexpensive drone—the phone enables it to find its way around enclosed indoor spaces without using GPS or a remote guide. Although it’s still at an early stage, the so-called SmartCopter could eventually make it safer and cheaper to scout out disaster scenes before human responders plunge in.

Another Silicon Valley startup by the name of Qardio is planning its jump into the remote health monitoring pool early next year with a mobile blood pressure cuff and a cardiac monitoring chest strap.

Martina Janeckova, who’s in charge of business development for the company, said that many people who should be taking daily blood pressure readings aren’t because it’s inconvenient to carry around a clunky device. Qardio wanted to change that. Its offering is different from other products on the market, according to Janeckova, in its design and user experience.

By 2015, adults aged 50 to 75 will make up 40 percent of the adult population. That has been a significant trend that has influenced the type of technologies startups are developing. A report by Start Up Health and the AARP  revealed that investment in digital health companies that include technology of interest to Americans in the 50+ market rose 28 percent in the past year to $928 million by the end of the third quarter this year. Chile government run accelerator Startup Chile has inducted 100 startups into the ninth generation of its accelerator program. The accelerator noted that these startups were selected from more than 28 countries and India accounted for 9% of the startups in the current batch.

The program offers $40,000 equity free seed capital, a one-year resident visa for any three team members mentioned during the application process and shared office space. The program will run for 24 weeks (around four months).
