DNAnexus builds online hub for scientists to store and share genetic data.

We all have vast and complicated datasets buried within us, and genomics startup DNAnexus wants to set that data free. Or at least help scientists make sense of it.

DNAnexus wrapped up $15 million for its cloud-based platform that manages and analyses large amounts of DNA data.

DNAnexus builds HIPAA-compliant solutions for genetic sequencing facilities, diagnostic test providers, and research centers. Its technology provides a central hub where large amounts of DNA data can be stored and analyzed, with “unlimited scaling of computational and storage resources.”

Novel Circuit Shrinks Laptop Chargers, Could Improve Appliance Efficiency.

A startup called FINsix has developed laptop power adapters that are 75 percent smaller than their conventional counterparts. The technology employed could also be used to improve the efficiency of a wide variety of devices and appliances, including washing machines and air conditioners.

FINsix’s first product, which the company will unveil next month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, replaces a conventional charging brick with a device just a little bigger than an ordinary plug. The 65-watt power adapter—which delivers more power than many laptops use—can charge multiple devices at once. It will be available by the middle of next year.

Nest reportedly raising a massive new round, could value it over $2B.

How much money is there in smart thermostats and smoke alarms? Try more than $2 billion.

Nest, the smart home gadget startup, is reportedly in the midst of raising a huge round of funding — between $150 million and $200 million – reports Re/Code (the site founded by the AllThingsD team). That range puts Nest’s future valuation somewhere between $2 billion and $3 billion, sources say.

While it sounds like investors are still actively trying to get in on the new round, sources tell Re/Code that Yuri Milner’s DST Global investment firm has scored the leading role.

Is SolarCity the ‘energy company of the 21st century’?

Some solar-energy companies have had a hard time in recent years, but SolarCity may look a little more promising.

That isn’t just because Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk is the company’s chairman, either — though it can’t hurt.

Instead, says The Atlantic, it’s because the company is starting to use Tesla battery packs for energy storage, as part of its solar array systems–a move increasingly thought to be an essential part of the push towards greener electricity.

17 Hot Industries to Watch in 2013.

The smartest entrepreneurs don’t emulate trends — they set them. In 2013, with both rapid technological advances (NFC, anyone?) and policy changes on the horizon, startup founders are looking ahead to figure out how, and where, to position their offerings so they can see the biggest wins.

Specifically, they’re looking to capitalize on emerging industries and technologies that will shape the way we do business in the future.

We asked members of the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an invitation-only nonprofit organization comprised of the country’s most promising young entrepreneurs, the following question to find out where, in 2013, the biggest opportunities can be found:

PTC acquires Internet of things startup ThingWorx for $112M.

The company builds technology for the manufacturing industry. The goal of this acquisition is to place PTC as a “major player” in industries that deal with the Internet of things, or everyday household items that are connected to the Web.

ThingWorx’s platform makes it easier for businesses to develop applications of the “connected world.” It has tools that make it easier to design and build apps and process and make sense of all the data that is generated.
