Why It’s Hard to Be Entrepreneurial.

For many years, I have talked with business executives about the need to reorient their attitudes toward failure. If they want their organizations to generate more good ideas, monetize the best of them, and in general innovate faster, they need to not only tolerate but celebrate the fruitless pilots and instructive flops that are an inevitable part of the process.

Oracle buying Corente to quickly connect data centers through software.

Oracle today revealed plans to bolster its networking portfolio by buying Corente, a company that has developed software for programming network resources between data centers.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it should close later this year.

Corente lets businesses control aspects of their networks through a single software interface rather than forcing administrators to manually set configurations on individual pieces of hardware.

Oracle wants to use that technology to help customers set up networks fast.

Livemap Demonstrates A Motorcycle Helmet Concept With Built-In Navigation.

Livemap, a Russian startup on-stage today at our CES Hardware Battlefield, aims to make GPS navigation more accessible to motorcyclists in the form of a new kind of helmet.

After all, CEO Andrew Artischev noted that if you’re riding a motorcycle, interacting with a GPS touchscreen interface isn’t exactly safe or convenient, and even looking at it means taking your eyes off the road. Livemap’s Motohelmet, on the other hand, is inspired by fighter pilots, who have “heads up” displays showing them important information directly in their helmets.

CES 2014: Eye-Tracking Game Controller for PCs Launching This Summer.

A new game controller announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Sunday could let PC gamers control the action with their eyes. The device, which is slated for release this summer, will likely mark the debut of eye tracking for a video-gaming product. Similar technology is typically used for psychological research or user experience testing.

The Top 5 Franchise Industries to Watch.

The companies that ranked in Entrepreneur's 35th annual Franchise 500® added a total of 8,725 U.S. franchise units between 2012 and 2013--a whopping 51 percent increase over the previous year's growth. They're spreading their influence overseas as well, with 8,332 new international units. It's a great sign that economic recovery is well on its way, and that franchises have an important part to play in it.

Here's a look at four franchise industries that are leading the way (and one that's up-and-coming), as well as the trends that are driving their growth.

EU study predicts clean energy, climate failure by 2050.

The EU's decarbonisation of its energy sector will only cut emissions by half the amount needed to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius in 2050, according to a business-as-usual scenario quietly released by the European Commission over the Christmas period.

Scientists and EU leaders agree that by mid-century, Europe must ramp up energy savings and green its power generation to slash CO2 emissions by 80-95% compared to 1990 levels, and so avoid catastrophic climate change.

Wearables at CES: The useful, the useless, and the downright bizarre.

At the International Consumer Electronics Show this year, wearables are clearly in. While the show has only been going on a day now, we’ve already seen countless new wearable devices from companies large and small. And some of them are even offering something new.

Some companies are experimenting with more accurate fitness monitors, while others are using wearables to create smarter, more contextual notifications. Other, slightly more unconventional products, are measuring things like sunlight and your posture.

In other words, wearables are one of the most exciting things at CES this year. Here are a few highlights.
