CES 2014: Audi Shows Off a Compact Brain for Self-Driving Cars.

Carmaker Audi showed off a book-sized circuit board capable of driving a car on Monday at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Audi claims the computer, called zFAS, represents a significant advance in automation technology because it is compact enough to fit into existing vehicles without compromising design.

Several different Audi vehicles equipped with zFAS drove themselves onto the stage during the presentation, and a new concept car designed to showcase it was also introduced.

The car, called the Audi Sport Quattro Laserlight, is capable of what Ulrich calls “piloted driving” but betrays no outward sign of being different from a conventional vehicle.

Pushing the envelope: improvements to buildings’ outer layer can slash energy use.

6 Economists Every Entrepreneur Should Know About.

For years I’ve rejected the false choice that entrepreneurs are forced to make when it comes to the subjects of political science and comparative economics.  First is the offer to buy in to the notion that there exists no natural connection between the underlying motivations and incentives which inspire entrepreneurs and their political and electoral choices.  Second is the assumption, courtesy of academia, that there is no unified way to approach the study of political science, economics and entrepreneurship – that the supposed best route is an introduction from ‘macro-economic’ and ‘micro-economic’ perspectives, with entrepreneurship a purely ‘micro,&r

CES 2014: Intel’s 3-D Camera Heads to Laptops and Tablets.

A combined 2-D and 3-D camera from Intel will be built into laptops and tablets from a range of manufacturers, the company announced at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on Monday. The camera allows a device to be controlled with arm, hand, and finger gestures, and is also intended to allow software to capture and understand the world around it, including people’s facial expressions.

“We see and touch in 3-D, so why do we have to use computers in 2-D?” asked Mooly Eden, general manager of Intel’s Perceptual Computing Group, before unveiling the new depth-sensing technology, called the Intel RealSense 3-D camera.

Some big data analytics companies strive to stand out with real-time mobile applications, captivating visualizations, or extra-simple search functions. And then there are startups targeting specific industries, like Zephyr Health, which takes in different kinds of data and displays findings in vertical-specific applications.

Zephyr’s approach just got some validation in the form of $15 million worth of venture funding. Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Jafco Ventures co-led the round. The new money will help Zephyr add to its engineering capabilities and build sales and marketing operations, Zephyr’s founder and chief executive, William King, told VentureBeat.
