Top techies invest millions in artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence seems to be on the minds of the world’s leading innovators and entrepreneurs these days, as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Tesla owner Elon Musk, former PayPal CEO Peter Thiel and actor Ashton Kutcher reportedly invested millions of dollars in San Francisco-based start up Vicarious, which specializes in the development of advanced computational models and machine learning software.

The multi-million dollar investment in the company, which was first reported by The Wall Street Journal last week, comes only a month after Google bought the AI company Deep Mind for $400 million.

World’s first self-cleaning solar park in the Arava Valley (Israel)

At Kibbutz Ketura, 100 Israeli-built robots clean off dusty PV panels nightly, increasing production by as much as 35%.

A

mid the prospect of cheap natural gas for electricity production, thanks to the major gas finds off Israel’s coast, demand for solar energy here has dulled. But this week, solar got a big boost as the Kibbutz Ketura solar park, jointly owned by Siemens AG and solar energy pioneer Arava Power, became the world’s first autonomously-cleaned solar energy production facility.

European healthcare 'not equipped' to meet future challenges.

With increased demand and limited resources, current healthcare policies may prove to be unsustainable in coming years, warned policymakers at an event organised by the European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE) in Brussels on Thursday (27 March).

The healthcare sector can add value to Europe's economy, provided that cost pressures are addressed. For example, the cost of diabetes can be reduced through smart investment in obesity treatment, they said.

Allergies: Europe’s most underestimated chronic diseases.

Although they disproportionately affect young people and impact many lives negatively, allergies are still neglected by medical specialists and few countries have adequate programmes in place to deal with them, writes Claudio Ciprian Tănăsescu.

Claudiu Ciprian Tănăsescu is a Romanian MEP in the S&D group and a member of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee in the European Parliament.

What are allergies? An allergy is defined as an exaggerated response of the human immune system to substances that should be harmless. While these may be manageable for some people, for many others they can have a serious impact on their lives.

European obesity on the rise: Study.

A new study from France shows that obesity is on the rise across Europe. What is to blame? Poor eating habits, stress and a lack of physical exercise. EurActiv France reports.

According to the French 'Mutuelle Générale de l’Education Nationale' (MGEN) and the polling institution Opinion Way, obesity is rapidly becoming a European epidemic. The survey was carried out between January and February 2014 and questioned 2339 people. It found that 16% of France's population is obese.

Lens-Free Camera Sees Things Differently.

Patrick Gill is excited to show me a small, fuzzy-looking picture of the Mona Lisa, printed in black and white on a piece of paper. It’s not much to look at, literally, but it’s unmistakably her, with long dark hair and that mysterious smile.

More intriguing than the low-resolution image of da Vinci’s masterpiece, though, is how the picture was created: with a lens-free camera that, at 200 micrometers across, is smaller than a pencil point.

Swedes are the most physically active in the EU.

According to a new survey on sport and physical activity by Eurobarometer, Northern Europe is more physically active than the South and East.

The survey reveals that 59% of EU citizens never or seldom exercise, or play sport, while 41% do so at least once a week. The most active citizens, who exercise or play sport at least once a week, are the Swedes (70%), followed by the Danes (68%) and the Finns (66%).

Most respondents who never exercise or play sport can be found in Bulgaria (78%), Malta (75%) and Portugal (64%).

New Order in Babel: Industrial Internet Consortium Will Make Machines and People Talk to Each Other.

The Internet is no longer just about email, ecommerce or Twitter. “We are at an inflection point,” says Joe Salvo, manager of Complex Systems Engineering Laboratory at GE Global Research. “The next wave of productivity will connect brilliant machines and people.”

But before that happens, they must find a common language. “It’s still like the Tower of Babel,” Salvo says. “We need to bring them together in powerful new networks.”
