Une agriculture bio pas si écologique.

Lors d'une étude menée sur les nappes phréatiques israéliennes, des chercheurs de l'Université Ben Gourion du Néguev ont découvert que, contrairement à l'idée reçue, les eaux présentes sous les serres où l'agriculture pratiquée est dite "biologiques" sont plus contaminées par des nitrates que celles présentes sous les serres où l'agriculture est dite "conventionnelle".
 

MOOC monster Udemy gets $32M.

Coursera receives lots of attention in the business of helping millions of people take free courses online. Now, Udemy has a shot at becoming just as big of a name.

The startup announced $32 million in new funding today.

Udemy offers some free courses, while it charges for others. It claims more than 3 million students, up 50 percent from January; while Coursera had hit 5 million as of October 2013. Competitor Udacity had more 1.6 million students by that time; and edX, a non-profit organization, claimed more than 1.3 million.

The two-year-old company’s office—a filled-to-bursting space in San Francisco’s South of Market tech hotbed—grinds, clatters, and whirs like a laundromat run amok. That’s the sound of industrial-strength mixers, grinders, and centrifuges churning out what the company hopes is a key ingredient in food 2.0: an animal-free replacement for the chicken egg.

Une autre solution pour produire du kérosène ?

Une équipe internationale de recherche a fabriqué pour la première fois un carburant pour réacteur à base de lumière solaire, d'eau et de dioxyde de carbone. Le Centre allemand de recherche aérospatiale (DLR) est partenaire du projet SOLAR-JET qui vise, à terme, à remplacer le kérosène qui est un produit du pétrole, par un carburant fabriqué à base de matériaux renouvelables.

Patrick Le Clercq, de l'Institut de technique de combustion du DLR, explique le principe du projet : "Nous avons changé de paradigme. Nous avons utilisé les émissions des procédés de combustions telles que la vapeur d'eau ou le dioxyde de carbone pour fabriquer un carburant."

GE to Acquire Wurldtech to Advance Cyber Security for Industrial Internet.

GE said today it would acquire the cyber security company Wurldtech to expand its digital arsenal for protecting critical infrastructure and operations technology.

GE has started connecting jet engines, power plants, locomotives and other technology to the Industrial Internet, an emerging digital network that connects machines, data and software with people.

Tesla Plans to Start Building Its Gigafactory Next Month.

 

Tesla Motors said it will start building a massive battery factory next month. A month or two later, it will start building a second factory in parallel. With construction started at two locations, the company reasons, it will be more likely that one will be ready in time to meet increasing demand for its electric cars.

Development in Africa has had a long history of Western influence and subsequent failure. The deployment of Western strategies has been especially problematic in the health sector. In the later part of the 90s, health initiatives were implemented throughout the continent to combat the spread of HIV. Unfortunately, many of the approaches used were based on programmes that had garnered success in North American cities with vastly different populations and infrastructure from the African countries they were doled out in. Even more problematic was the universality with which the programmes were unleashed, illuminating the flawed conceptualisation of Africa as a country instead of a multifaceted continent.
