That Amazing 'Solar Roadways' Project Has a Working Prototype.

Four years ago, Scott and Julie Brusaw announced their provocative concept of "Solar Roadways," a system of modular solar panels that could be paved directly onto roads, parking lots, driveways, bike paths, "literally any surface under the sun." Since then, the Brusaws have received two rounds of funding from the Federal Highway Administration as well as a private grant to develop their project.

The Rate of New Business Formation Has Fallen By Almost Half Since 1978.

Historically in the U.S., about one new business has been formed every minute, while another shutters its doors every 80 seconds. This life cycle of birth and death – referred to as business dynamism – is a key driver of innovation and to overall economic growth, giving rise to the great “gales of creative destruction” that the economist Joseph Schumpeter identified as the motor of force of capitalism.

The U.S. economy is less dynamic across all major industries as well as across geographic regions.

The Streaming Music App Ecosystem: Where Does Beats Music Rank?

Apple’s rumored $3.2B acquisition of Beats Music would be its biggest ever and a break from its prior strategy of generally avoiding huge M&A transactions.  One of the reasons posited for Apple’s motivation in acquiring Beats would be the rise of streaming music services and apps for music consumption.  Of course, others point to Beats “cool” factor as another reason and even the possibility of a biometric headphone sensor.

But if you believe the streaming music hypothesis, how does Beats stack up versus competitors?

A Cheaper Tool for Virtual Sculpting.

In medical examiners’ offices around the United States alone, some 25,000 unidentified human skulls, many of homicide victims, await identification. That process can be greatly aided by generating a 3-D reconstruction of what the person’s face may have looked like.

Now the price of one key technology that allows this, and has many other applications besides, is dropping fast. The technology is called a haptic stylus—a gadget connected to mechanical apparatus that gives force-feedback sensations to let artists “feel” what they’re doing as they sculpt a 3-D image on the screen, such as from a CT scan of a skull.
