Fitting e-waste into the circular economy.

Phones, computers, washing machines - integrating a few core principles, such as the waste hierarchy, into the manufacturing of these products can reduce their environmental impact and allow for a functioning circular economy, according to analysts.

Every year, manufacturers release new and updated electronics onto the market, and consumers rush to keep up, leaving behind large numbers of unwanted and unused products.

Many are left hidden away in drawers or make their way to landfill, while companies source more raw materials, such as metals and oils for plastics, to supply the market.

The Innovation Strategy Big Companies Should Pursue.

The inability of established firms to come up with breakthrough innovations is a truism today. It wasn’t always so. Joseph Schumpeter, the 20th century economist known for heralding the role of innovation in the evolution of society, argued that established firms were best positioned to innovate because of the resources available to them. Edith Penrose, one of the most prominent management thinkers of the 20th century, agreed.

3rd big UK water contract for ‘bubble tech’ start-up.

United Utilities, the UK’s largest listed water company, is the latest water utility to sign a contract with Israel’s Mapal Green Energy for wastewater treatment. United Utilities is now the third UK water provider to purchase Mapal’s bubble aeration water purification system for use in municipal and regional water supply systems.

The deal is set to supply Mapal-purified water to approximately 7 million northwest England homes. Mapal last year signed deals with Anglian Water and Thames Water, two large water suppliers in southern England. As a bonus, Mapal has been accepted as a member of British Water, the UK’s leading trade body.

As Deal Activity to Music Startups in the US Declines, Is Regulation to Blame?

Are investors over music startups in the United States? In a recent blog post regarding net neutrality, Fred Wilson attributed the lack of music startups to regulations in the US and lack of interest from investors in funding upfront negotiations often required within the music industry. Despite this, Internet and Mobile Music startups raised $376.4M in funding across 35 deals in 2013 which represented a multi-year funding high.

AOL Co-Founder Steve Case Invests $30 Million Into School Lunch Company, Revolution Foods.

AOL co-founder Steve Case, via his investment fund Revolution Growth, has now made a second deal to fund a company focused on healthy eating. The firm is putting $30 million into Revolution Foods (no relation to Revolution Growth!), a company launched eight years ago by two women and mothers who wanted to find a better and more affordable way to provide healthier school lunches.

As with last year’s $22 million investment into organic salad chain Sweetgreen, Revolution Foods is not really a “tech” company, however.

This ‘connected car’ comes with gesture control and Wi-Fi — and it knows if you’re drunk.

The Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association unveiled a “connected car” demo vehicle today in Windsor, Ontario, with built-in 4G, Wi-Fi, 360-degree proximity sensors, in-vehicle inductive mobile device charging, and gesture-based controls.

Hope you’re not a hand talker — you could find yourself suddenly in reverse.

“Dream cars these days are defined more by technology than by what’s under the hood,” a representative told VentureBeat. “This concept car is made up of hundreds of parts and components that establish a new benchmark for what a connected car can be.”
