Healthcare technology is hot stuff, with startups and investors from Silicon Valley to the Charles River chasing after the next paradigm-shifting blockbuster innovation. Each passing quarter sees an ever-increasing tally of eager rounds of funding.
In the first three quarters of 2013, health IT venture capital leapt steadily from $493 million to $623 million to $737 million, according to Mercom Capital Group. By Q1 2014, it was up to $858 million.
Accel Partners and existing investors just dropped a new $25 million into Vectra Networks, a security startup deeply connected to U.S. national security officials.
Calling itself “the leader in real-time detection of cyber attacks in progress,” Vectra previously raised $17.8 million before it even launched. The startup specializes in enterprise network security.
2013 had all the signs of being a comeback year for venture capital. Booming public equities and a recovered IPO market generated record portfolio company exits and distributions from VC funds. The industry realized its highest returns since the Internet boom.
Yet 2013 annual industry performance data from Cambridge Associates shows that venture capital continues to underperform the S&P 500, NASDAQ and Russell 2000.
Sweat can be a smelly messenger, but one that also carries a trove of valuable information about how our bodies are feeling. Scientists at several labs are now trying to pick its lock with nanotechnology, including know-how transferred from GE’s jet engine research, to develop flexible, Band-Aid-like wireless sensors sensitive enough to detect a drop of biomolecules found in sweat in 2.5 million gallons of water.
Today, Dreamit Ventures introduced its 2014 class of New York start-ups.
Dreamit’s accelerator program offers accepted parties $25,000 in seed funding and three to four months to get the company up and running, along with office space and mentorships.
Here’s a list of five companies from the program to look out for.
In order to get more companies through its program, 500 Startups has been alternating between hosting batches in San Francisco and Mountain View, California. The accelerator’s tenth batch will be the second based in San Francisco.

Everyone knows they should be drinking more water to stay healthy and hydrated, but actually remembering to do so can be a challenge. In fact, 43% of Americans drink four cups or fewer per day, according a 2012 study from the Center for Disease Control. That’s where The Hug, now on Kickstarter, comes in. The Hug solution includes a sensor band that wraps around just about any water bottle to track your H2O consumption, and an accompanying mobile app that reminds you to drink when your hydration levels are low.
