Zubie raises $8M for in-dash connected car device

Putting smartphone intelligence in the car is nothing new, but integrating smartphones with on-board car computers is a relatively fresh trick.

Zubie makes a small device that plugs in underneath the dash and reports car health stats to a smartphone in the car. It also offers social features for detecting loved ones who might also be on the road.

The company announced today that it has raised a new $8 million funding round, led by Nokia Venture Partners and Magna International. Existing Zubie investors Castrol innoVentures, Comporium, and OpenAir Equity Partners also participated in the round.

TelePharm raises $2.5M for web-based telepharmacy platform.

There’s still a lot of work to be done to get the nation’s pharmacies, big and small, connected with each other and with patients. For rural pharmacies this connection can mean the difference between solvency and closure.

One Iowa City, Iowa-based startup TelePharm, has built a secure, proprietary tech platform that connects rural pharmacies to pharmacists in centralized locations.

Almost one in six doctor visits will be virtual this year.

eVisits are expected to save $5B this year over the cost of traditional in-office physician visits.

With an aging Baby Boomer population and broadband bandwidth improved a hundredfold from a decade ago, telemedicine is exploding as a convenient and less costly alternative to the traditional visit to the doctors' office.

This year in the U.S. and Canada, 75 million of 600 million appointments with general practitioners will involve electronic visits, or eVisits, according to new research from Deloitte.

Fishing in the Data Lake: GE and Pivotal Pioneer New Approach to Industrial Data

GE and Pivotal said they built the first industrial-scale “data lake” system that could supercharge how companies store, manage and glean insight from information harvested from machines connected to the Industrial Internet.

The system, which has already tracked more than 3 million flights and gathered 340 terabytes of data, can analyze data 2,000 times faster than previous methods and cut costs tenfold. It is so powerful that it crunched through a complex task that would have taken a month to compute in just 20 minutes.

Stacking Cells Could Make Solar as Cheap as Natural Gas.

When experts talk about future solar cells, they usually bring up exotic materials and physical phenomena. In the short term, however, a much simpler approach—stacking different semiconducting materials that collect different frequencies of light—could provide nearly as much of an increase in efficiency as any radical new design. And a new manufacturing technique could soon make this approach practical.

The startup Semprius, based in Durham, North Carolina, says it can produce very efficient stacked solar cells quickly and cheaply, opening the door to efficiencies as high as 50 percent. (Conventional solar cells convert less than 25 percent of the energy in sunlight into electricity.)
