An Israeli-led research team has discovered how a mysterious circular type of genetic molecule is produced, and that might have implications for the treatment of degenerative diseases like muscular dystrophy.
The group of molecules, called circular RNA, was rediscovered only two years ago, and little was known about where it comes from or what it does in the body, let alone about the role it plays in disease. By analyzing human and fruit fly cells, the scientists found that the body produces circular RNA at the expense of “normal” RNA, greatly reducing gene expression — the driver of life.

Chinese wireless networking gear giant Huawei has acquired a UK Internet of Things (IoT) company called Neul for $25 million, reports say.
Neul, the reports say, will provide the nucleus of a large new effort by Huawei to get involved in the IoT business. Huawei will reportedly build a “center of excellence” around Neul in the UK.
Cambridge, U.K.-based Neul makes the radio modules that allow “things” to talk to each other, and to a central host. These are very lightweight, low-power sensors and meters that are used in industrial environments.

Swedish telecom Ericsson demonstrated a big commitment to the cloud business today, by announcing that it’s taken a majority stake in Apcera, a startup with software for running applications in clouds or companies’ data centers.
The deal gives new cloud capabilities to Ericsson but lets Apcera remain a standalone company, according to a statement on the news.
On the surface, the deal puts Ericsson in the same camp as other telecommunications companies that have shelled out to enhance their cloud offerings. CenturyLink, NTT, and Verizon, among others, have already made cloud moves. Now Ericsson has set itself up to gain cloud mindshare.
