Charge Yourself: Solar-Powered Charging Stations To Recharge Our Phones And Minds.

Smartphones are an integral part of our modern lives, but few things are more annoying than realizing you are about to run out of battery. This predicament is especially distressing when you are on the run between meetings, and barely have a minute to eat your lunch, let alone charge your phone.

Clayton Christensen: Are Investors Bad For Business?

The June 2014 issue of Harvard Business Review has an important trio of articles that examine whether capitalism is on the right track, under the banner, “Are Investors Bad For Business.” I will discuss each of the articles in separate reviews, beginning with the article by Clayton Christensen and Derek van Bever, “The Capitalist’s Dilemma.” Some of the ideas in the article are wonderful. To understand what’s going on, it’s helpful to see the evolution of Christensen’s thought over several decades.

Israeli firm looks to keep solar power generators running at night.

An Israeli solar power company, Brenmiller Energy, says it has developed a new, more efficient way to store heat from the sun that could give a boost to the thermal solar power industry by enabling plants to run at full capacity night and day.

By next year company founder Avi Brenmiller said he will have a 1.5 megawatt (MW), 15-acre (6-hectare) site in the Negev desert connected to Israel's national grid, and a number of 10 to 20-MW pilots abroad are expected to follow, which will produce electricity at a price which competes with power from fossil-fuelled plants.

Oculus VR’s ‘Crescent Bay’ prototype shows why VR still has a long way to go.

From here on out, I want all virtual reality demos to use Crescent Bay. I realize that’s completely unfair and unrealistic for developers who are working with older headsets, but the new Oculus Rift prototype comes amazingly close to achieving the kind of VR we’ve read about or seen in countless sci-fi books and movies.

Jiff raises $18M for employee health tech platform.

Despite all the changes in American healthcare over the past few years, half of all Americans still get their insurance from their employer.

As more large employers self-insure, they’re under pressure to manage the health care costs racked up by their employees — in short, to keep them from running up so many doctor bills. This creates a nice opportunity for companies that make technology platforms designed to engage employees in health and wellness programs.

EmTech: A Hybrid Solution for Cheap Desalination.

Desalination takes a surprising amount of energy, but in California many communities are actually using just as much energy to pump fresh water to where it’s needed.

John Lienhard, a professor of water and food at MIT, offered a potentially better solution at our EmTech conference this morning. Like so much in energy efficiency, it’s a hybrid approach. He suggests building a system that involves both pumping and desalination.
