Four 'holy grail' objectives for future public health.

Many EU governments have made deep cuts to healthcare spending during the financial crisis. But changing demographics mean drastic change is around the corner, with four challenging objectives.

As life expectancy continues to rise, more people are expected to suffer from age-related chronic diseases, putting pressure on healthcare systems.

The Dutch National Institute for Public health and the Environment (RIVM) has mapped out future health outcomes for the Netherlands, based on four objectives.

"None of these perspectives will be the reality," warned Henk Hilderink, a senior scientific research at RIVM, as he presented the scenarios at the European Health Forum Gastein (EHFG) in Bad Hofgastein in Austria on Wednesday (1 October).

Alteryx pushes data analytics for everyone, gets $60M to grow.

Alteryx, a startup with software that lets everyone, even non-technical people, analyze corporate data, is announcing a $60 million funding round this morning.

Growing into a bigger provider of such tooling is the whole point of today’s round. Insight Venture Partners is leading, while SAP Ventures and Toba Capital are also participating in this round.

For their achievements in generating solar power and hydrogen fuel, two researchers receive a million dollar prize.

The inventor of a low-cost solar cell that works even when the sun isn’t out and a researcher who is using artificial photosynthesis to convert solar energy into hydrogen fuel are the two winners of the $1million Eric and Sheila Samson Prize, the world’s largest award for innovation in the field of alternative fuels. The winners were announced Monday by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Science, Technology and Space Minister Yaakov Peri.

Can Sucking CO2 Out of the Atmosphere Really Work?

Physicist Peter Eisenberger had expected colleagues to react to his idea with skepticism. He was claiming, after all, to have invented a machine that could clean the atmosphere of its excess carbon dioxide, making the gas into fuel or storing it underground. And the Columbia University scientist was aware that naming his two-year-old startup Global Thermostat hadn’t exactly been an exercise in humility.

Ambi Climate Gives Any Air Conditioner Nest-Like Powers.

Ambi Climate wants to democratize smart home climate control with a device that brings learning climate management to standalone window air conditioner units, central air systems, freestanding systems or the single room machines more common in Europe and Asia, so long as the existing system can work with an IR-based blaster or remote. It originally launched in July on Asia-specific crowdfunding site Crowdtivate, but now it’s looking to expand its audience in North America.

HP CEO Meg Whitman: We’re breaking up the company so we can compete.

This morning on an investor call, Hewlett-Packard officially addressed its plans to split into two companies, HP Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Enterprise.

The split came as a slight surprise to investors. In 2011 when the company first considered dividing into two companies, CEO and President Meg Whitman said breaking the company up didn’t make sense.

Data Driving the Future of Clean Tech.

Clean tech may conjure images of electric vehicles and solar-powered homes, but it’s no longer just about stand-alone hardware technologies you can plug into the grid or drive on the road.

Clean tech is increasingly about IT-enabled distributed and fully integrated energy systems that have the potential to transform lives around the world — as well as the prosperity and productivity of countries across the globe.

Future Smartphones Won’t Need Cell Towers to Connect

A new feature being added to the LTE protocol that smartphones use to communicate with cellular towers will make it possible to bypass those towers altogether. Phones will be able to “talk” directly to other mobile devices and to beacons located in shops and other businesses.

Known as LTE Direct, the wireless technology has a range of up to 500 meters, far more than either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. It is included in update to the LTE standard slated for approval this year, and devices capable of LTE Direct could appear as soon as late 2015.

It’s time for the next wave of healthcare analytics startups.

“Big data” and analytics applied to healthcare is a hot area of investment. This year alone, roughly $200 million of venture capital dollars has been allocated to the space (according to Rock Health). I’m here to tell you that these glory days are gone.

New startups are finding it difficult to differentiate from the swath of other companies unless they have something extremely novel.

While I still believe in the transformative power of data in healthcare (I’ve had two successful exits with analytics companies: RxAnte and Humedica), it’s increasingly clear to me that the current space is beginning to commoditize:
