Stem Cells Seem Safe in Treating Eye Disease.

When stem cells were first culled from human embryos sixteen years ago, scientists imagined they would soon be treating diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and many other diseases with cells manufactured in the lab.

It’s all taken longer than they thought. But today, a Massachusetts biotech firm reported results from the largest, and longest, human test of a treatment based on embryonic stem cells, saying it appears safe and may have partly restored vision to patients going blind from degenerative diseases.

Welltok raises $25M for its health ‘optimization’ platform

Because of changes to the way the government and commercial insurers are reimbursing for health services, health insurers and providers are looking for ways to control the costs of caring for members. The best way, perhaps, is to keep them healthy on an ongoing basis. Healthy plan members use less health services than unhealthy ones, allowing the insurer to keep more of every premium dollar.

That’s why consumer health engagement platforms like Welltok’s have been attracting both new customers and new investment dollars in the last few years.

Omada brings pre-diabetes into the open with virtual prevention.

There’s an oft-heard story in digital health circles: A patient comes into the doctor’s office complaining of common pre-diabetic symptoms, so the doctor — who has no treatment code for “pre-diabetes” — tells the patient, “Come back when you have diabetes.”

And the patient often does come back with diabetes.

Breathometer launches a HealthKit-ready wearable breathalyzer.

Measuring blood alcohol level might be just as important to some people as measuring steps or heart rate. It’s a relatively new metric in the “quantified self” movement, but it makes sense.

Breathometer today unveiled a new device in its line of breathalyzers — a wearable gadget called the Breeze that can clip onto your clothing or onto the inside of a purse.

Invitae raises $120M for its $1,500 gene sequencing test.

Genomics will someday be your doctor’s major weapon for keeping you healthy throughout your life.

The San Francisco-based genetics company Invitae is pushing hard toward making that a reality. The company has developed a test that sequences 218 types of genes to find markers that might point toward health problems in the future.

The company has now taken a sizable $120 million funding round from The Broe Group, Decheng Capital, Deerfield Management, OrbiMed, Perceptive Advisors, Rock Springs Capital, and Wellington Management Company, among others. The company isn’t saying who led the round.

Hello Doctor gets $700K for its personal medical records app.

Interoperability among the electronic health records systems at different hospitals or clinics is still a big problem. Not only is it a technical challenge, but there are often competitive reasons not to share. Hospitals and clinics are businesses, after all, and they compete with each other.

This does patients no good of course. It means that they often have personal clinical data spread around numerous providers, and their personal health record is often incomplete or outdated.
