The Fortune Global 500 Isn’t All That Global.

The 2014 DHL Global Connectedness Index that one of us (Ghemawat) prepares with Steven Altman, and that was released on November 3, indicates that global connectedness started to deepen again in 2013 after its recovery stalled in 2012. In other words, there’s now a higher volume of information, capital, people, and trade flows between countries.

The Surprising Truth About Where New Jobs Come From.

“Don’t let anybody tell you that it’s corporations and businesses that create jobs,” Hillary Clinton said last week in Boston. “You know that old theory, trickle-down economics. That has been tried, that has failed. It has failed rather spectacularly. One of the things my husband says when people say, ‘What did you bring to Washington?’ He says, ‘I brought arithmetic.’ ”

Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria: 10 of the Worst

The Longitude Prize is aiming to help battle the problem of antibiotic resistance among bacteria, but what exactly are we up against?

The global problem of antibiotic resistance is fast becoming one of the major scientific issues of modern times. The development of new antibiotics is slow and difficult work but bacterial resistance is decreasing our arsenal of existing drugs posing a catastrophic threat as ordinary infections become untreatable.

Google unveils its Container Engine to run apps in the best possible way on its cloud.

Now, you, too, can run complicated applications super-efficiently inside of Google data centers, thanks to a new tool in the company’s public cloud called Google Container Engine.

See, Google knows a good bit about scheduling a wide variety of applications to run simultaneously in its data centers, having run popular web services for so many years. This year, Google shared some of its knowledge with the world in the form of the open-source Kubernetes container-management software. Today, it’s going one step further by introducing the Container Engine, which amounts to a hosted version of Kubernetes running on the Google Cloud Platform.

Israelis create DNA wire for computer of future.

An experimental working electrical wire made out of DNA, made by an Israeli-led team of scientists, could be a breakthrough toward building the next generation of computers.

Electrical circuits composed of molecules have long been the great hope for computer miniaturization. The main obstacle to their development has been finding the right wiring. DNA is a leading candidate, because it can self-assemble into complex shapes, which could make a tiny circuit. But nobody had been able to get DNA to actually conduct electricity — until now.

Google’s Expansion into Medical Technology.

When we think of Google, we think of the company that powers the widely used search engine, and we think of computer programming, engineering, and electrical design. However, recently Google has expanded and moved towards research in medical technology. Just a few months ago, the tech giant partnered with Novartis to license a glucose measuring smart contact lens.
