The new reality of venture capital: Disconnect between value creation and capture.

The venture capital industry creates value that far outweighs the dollars allocated to it. But ten year returns to investors haven’t reflected that fact.

Innovation presents opportunities to solve customer problems more effectively and efficiently. But creating solutions that don’t yet exist involves a high degree of uncertainty. Usually, you need to spend a considerable amount of time and money before you know your efforts are going to pan out. That’s where risk capital comes into play; private investors invest money with the hopes of earning outsized returns to account for the level of risk they’re taking.

Fish oil reduces smoking, Israeli study suggests.

Omega-3 supplements help reduce the number of cigarettes that addicts smoke in a given day, a new Israeli study found.

The study, conducted by Dr. Sharon Rabinovitz Shenkar of the University of Haifa, indicated that the fish oil capsules significantly reduced nicotine craving and helped participants cut down their cigarette consumption by at least 11 percent.

According to Rabinovitz Shenkar, head of the addictions program at the University of Haifa’s School of Criminology, current medications used to help quit smoking are not effective and carry adverse effects.

Independence for the paralyzed via a life-changing cellphone.

In just a few months, individuals who cannot use their limbs due to conditions like ALS, paralysis, Parkinsons, multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injuries will be able to – some for the first time in many years – make phone calls, surf the internet, read and send email, even play games, all on their cellphones.

The Sesame Phone, a product of Israeli computer vision and gesture technology research, will enable those suffering from near-paralysis to interact with their smartphones like anyone else, said the Sesame Phone’s inventor, Oded Ben-Dov.

Digital Ubiquity: How Connections, Sensors, and Data Are Revolutionizing Business.

For more than a century General Electric made most of its revenue by selling industrial hardware and repair services. But in recent years GE was at increasing risk of losing many of its top customers to nontraditional competitors—IBM and SAP on the one hand, and big-data start-ups on the other. Those competitors aimed to shift the customer value proposition away from acquiring reliable industrial equipment to deriving new efficiencies and other benefits through advanced analytics and algorithms based on the data generated by that equipment. The trend threatened to turn GE into a commodity equipment provider.

Rise of the Robot Security Guards.

As the sun set on a warm November afternoon, a quartet of five-foot-tall, 300-pound shiny white robots patrolled in front of Building 1 on Microsoft’s Silicon Valley campus. Looking like a crew of slick Daleks imbued with the grace of Fred Astaire, they whirred quietly across the concrete in different directions, stopping and turning in place so as to avoid running into trash cans, walls, and other obstacles.

The robots managed to appear both cute and intimidating. This friendly-but-not-too-friendly presence is meant to serve them well in jobs like monitoring corporate and college campuses, shopping malls, and schools.
