Plastic bricks could protect Indian homes from monsoon.

Bricks made from soft plastic waste that can each withstand six tonnes of pressure and relentless rain could replace the clay bricks currently used to build rural homes in monsoon-prone countries such as India.

Clay is susceptible to rain, and many homes in India can be badly damaged during the monsoon season, as clay bricks are washed away.

Water target least on-track among all development goals, UN says.

Halving the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation is “the least on-track target” of the millennium development goals (MDGs), as 2.5 billion people still lack basic sanitation facilities.

Commission looks to trade policy to protect key tech industries.

The new EU executive will continue to focus industrial policy on so-called key enabling technologies, but is seeking to protect European industry from unfair foreign competition.

Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) cover six areas underpinning a range of products in strategic export markets, including the security, health and energy sectors. They include nanotechnology, micro-nanoelectronics, phototonics, advanced materials, industrial biotechnology and advanced manufacturing.

In June 2012, the Commission tabled a strategy to boost the industrial production of KETs-based products, aiming to keep pace with the EU’s main international competitors, restore growth in Europe and create jobs in industry.
