DataGravity Grabs $50M More to Combine Storage and Computing.

Let’s hear it for Series C funding rounds in tech. In a tough year for mid-stage startup financing deals, at least one Boston-area company isn’t feeling a crunch.

Its market sector has a lot to do with that. Nashua, NH-based enterprise IT startup DataGravity has raised a $50 million C round, led by new investor Accel Partners. Previous investors including Andreessen Horowitz, CRV, and General Catalyst also participated in the round. The company has now raised $92 million to date.

Doctor on Demand launches virtual mental health visits.

The mobile telemedicine company Doctor on Demand has found a promising new use for its technology platform — enabling customers to have virtual visits with a mental health professional.

The San Francisco-based startup has completely redesigned its app to reflect the expansion of its services to mental health. It also set up a whole new network of mental health professionals in all 50 states to answer customers’ calls. In total the network consists of 300 licensed therapists.

Providers must have a PhD or an MD behind their name to participate. They also have to commit to 15 hours a week to take calls on the service.

ZSpace, EchoPixel bring 3-D virtual reality technology to medical schools.

Two Silicon Valley companies have developed a 3-D virtual reality kit that lets medical students and doctors practice surgeries and organ dissections without the messiness of working on real cadavers.

Three-dimensional holographic imaging display maker zSpace, based in Sunnyvale, provides the hardware, including stereoscopic VR displays and transparent glasses. Mountain View's EchoPixel Inc., which makes medical imaging technology, provides the software.

Torquing Group has just raised a bunch of money to fund the development of Zano, a drone that serves as your own personal paparazzi. You can use gesture controls to point where you want Zano to fly and shoot videos of you.

Naturally, this aerial photography gadget has caught a lot of attention. The company launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to raise $195,000 over 30 days. But in one day, more than 3,696 backers have pledged £652,513, or $1.02 million.

Sensors for the Internet of things and cars will fuel chip growth in 2015, survey says.

Sensors are expected to be a big opportunity for chip makers in 2015, according to an annual survey of chip executives by audit, tax, and advisory firm KPMG. That’s a pretty good sign that the Internet of things, or making everyday objects smarter and connected, is driving the industry’s growth.

Pharma/Biotech vs. Digital Health – Where Is Investment In Healthcare Going?

The biotech/pharma industry continues to grow with 2013 posting $4.8B+ in investment. $4.6B+ has already been deployed this year which suggests that biotech/pharma is poised to hit a 6-year high by the end of 2014. While biotech/pharma may win in absolute numbers, the digital health industry has had explosive growth since 2009, already breaking $3B this year. At the current rate of investment, digital health is on track to exceed $4B in funding, which represents a 987% increase since 2009, and a 91% increase since last year.

Intel glues together its Internet of Things platform for big customers.

Intel took the wraps off its integrated Internet of Things platform that is starting to drive real revenue at the chip giant. In the past year, the IoT division’s revenue is expected to grow 18 percent to $2 billion in 2014, according to Doug Davis, head of the division, in a media briefing today. And now the company will give customers a single platform to create Internet of Things applications.
