‘Things’ Are Heating Up: What’s New in the Internet of Things

Sories about the Internet of Things — everyday objects that have been upgraded to send and receive data — are growing ever more common in the media, and for good reason. As a July post in the New York Times’ Bits blog commented, “Over the next few years, very little stands to be bigger than the Internet of Things, or IoT…. The IoT is expected to eventually touch some 200 billioncars, appliances, machinery and devices globally.”

Buildings efficiency ‘absolutely central’ to 2030 climate package.

Unlocking the energy saving potential of the continent’s ageing building stock will be “absolutely central” to a key review of EU policy this summer, the EU’s top energy efficiency official has said.

But Paul Hodson, the head of the EU’s energy efficiency unit, flagged "micro" public action as the way forward, dampening hopes of major policy advances in the review which will stock-take progress towards meeting 2020 energy saving goals and mull 2030 objectives.

The paper will now be published in July, during the EU’s summer vacation period.

Lessons Learned from Entrepreneurship (and Hustling)

I've got an important anniversary coming up. In January, I will have officially been running my own business for three consecutive years. I've been working full-time on my company, ELSA AND ME, since leaving my corporate gig for good in December 2011. Last year at this time -- my second year in business and the beginning of this year -- was most likely the toughest time since launch and it taught me a lot, not only about running a business, but also about myself.

Cisco buys Neohapsis to bolster its cloud and mobile security savvy.

Cisco today announced that it has bought a cloud and mobile security company called Neohapsis, which has experience working with enterprises to make their applications more secure.

Neohapsis specializes in penetration testing, risk assessment for applications, networking infrastructure evaluations, and other services. After the deal closes, the Neohapsis team will join Cisco’s Security Services division.

The deal follows Cisco’s acquisition of security hardware and software provider Sourcefire last year.

Security firm Area 1 raises $8M to prevent phishing attacks for enterprises.

Security firm Area 1 just landed $8 million in its first round of funding, which Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers led.

The company focuses on early stage attacks. Its products prevent waterhole and phishing strikes, pesky exploits where an attacker pretends to be a trusted source to get credentials and other sensitive information often via email, websites, and other platforms. But that’s just the start. Hackers who launch phishing attacks are usually just at the beginning of a long destructive campaign on enterprise networks.
