Tesla stopped making the $100,000-plus Roadster in 2011, but this spring those who already own one can upgrade it to travel 400 miles on a charge, a 50 percent increase. The new range is competitive with conventional cars, which typically can travel 350 to 500 miles on a tank of gasoline. Tesla isn’t saying how much the upgrade will cost Roadster owners.
Part of the Roadster’s range boost will come from using tires with less rolling resistance and from making modifications to the car’s body that improve its aerodynamics.
Many cars already include plenty of sensors—cameras for spotting objects in your blind spot, for instance—but they’re usually keeping an eye on the outside world, not on what’s going on behind the wheel.
NeuroDerm Ltd's shares more than doubled in value on Tuesday, after the company said data from a mid-stage study suggested that a higher dose of its Parkinson's drug could provide an alternative to treatments that require surgery.
The trial evaluated two liquid formulations of the drug, levodopa/carbidopa (LD/CD), in 16 patients with an advanced form of the disease to assess its capacity to reduce Parkinson's-related motor complications, the Israel-based company said.
Delivered through a belt-worn pump, the two versions of the drug, ND0612H and ND0612L, were compared with oral forms of LD/CD, the standard of care for Parkinson's.
A new form of computer memory might help machines match the capabilities of the human brain when it comes to tasks such as interpreting images or video footage.
Researchers at IBM used what’s known as phase-change memory to build a device that processes data in a way inspired by the workings of a biological brain. Using a prototype phase-change memory chip, the researchers configured the system to act like a network of 913 neurons with 165,000 connections, or synapses, between them. The strength of those connections change as the chip processes incoming data, altering how the virtual neurons influence one another. By exploiting that property, the researchers got the system to learn to recognize handwritten numbers.
Tech entrepreneurs were busy in 2014, building startups and raising money for products that could make it big in 2015.
While no one can predict the future, there are a handful of startups we are especially excited to watch in the coming year.
This unscientific list, compiled by VentureBeat’s staff from their own reporting, is an eclectic list of startups that we think are especially promising. We did the same thing last year, picking 26 amazing startups to watch in 2014. How did we do? Check out our analysis of our 2014 picks. (And we’ll do the same thing with this list next year.)
The Internet of Things, or IoT, emerged as the third wave of internet development and is gradually merging the physical and online worlds. Prompted by the smart hardware boom, this sector is in full bloom in China, with repercussions across fields such as smart homes, wearables, connected cities and cars, and beyond.
The size of the Chinese IoT market has soared from RMB 170 billion (around $27 billion) in 2009 to RMB365 billion in 2012, and exceeded RMB500 billion in 2013, with annual compound growth of almost 30 percent. The burgeoning market is attracting ever more companies: here are ten startups worth watching in the new year.
