It’s a dilemma that many tech startups face: How quickly should they expand beyond their first product? Adding new products and services might help grow sales, but young, small companies need to be careful that they don’t bite off more than they can chew.
Milwaukee healthcare technology startup Mpirik wrestled with that question, and decided to waste no time in pushing ahead with multiple products at a relatively early stage. “It made more and more sense” as company leaders realized their three software products are “very much symbiotic,” CEO Sue Ela says.
When Kaspersky Lab revealed last week that it had uncovered a sophisticated piece of malware designed to plant malicious code inside the firmware of computers, it should have surprised no one.
And that’s not just because documents leaked by Edward Snowden have shown that spy agencies like the NSA have an intense interest in hacking the firmware of systems, but also because other researchers have shown in the past how insecure firmware—in nearly all systems—is.
Thought your smartphone’s GPS is the only way for others to track your movements…? Think again. An alarming new study shows that information about the geolocation of Android phones can be retrieved simply by tracking your phone’s energy consumption over time – no GPS needed. Creepy? We thought so.
In other words, even if you turn your cellular data off, it is still possible for someone to track you, or spy on your moves, according to a study by researchers at Israeli defense technology company Rafael and Stanford University. The researchers dubbed this alternative positioning system “PowerSpy” and warned about the dangers of carrying a smartphone.
“Utilities are [prepared to give] away about $3 billion a year” as rebates on energy-efficient appliances, Simple Energy CEO and cofounder Yoav Lurie told VentureBeat.
“But,” he added, “less than seven percent [of consumers] follow them up on the offer, because the forms are complicated.”
In other words, it’s an opportunity for disruption.
Lurie’s company is today unveiling its utility-partnering Marketplace for instant appliance rebates. Instead of having to fill out forms, send them in, and wait for weeks, consumers get energy-efficiency rebates from the utility right on the website at the time of purchase.
Open Listings is a startup fresh out of the current Y Combinator batch that’s easing the home buying process by letting people move forward without real estate agents.
Because two-thirds of the overall residential market involves repeat buyers, some people may not want to rely on agents because they’re already familiar with what to do. So instead, Open Listings will refund the 3 percent agent commission, which can amount to tens of thousands of dollars here in California, and charge a flat fee instead. It’s basically a self-service platform with on-demand human experts.
Gas bidezko estufen sistema berria da Ecoflow, Coprecik, Skytech fabrikatzaile amerikarrarekin batera garatu duena. Sistema hau modu askotara konfiguratu daiteke: ON/OFF funtzio sinplea aktibatu dezakegu baina aukera termostatikoa eta “real flame” funtzioak aukeratzeko aukera ere eskaintzen digu, azken horrek, gas bidezko estufak egurrezko estufa baten sugarraren simulazioa eginez.
Azpimarratzekoa da Ecoflow sistema erabiltzeko erraztasuna, segurtasuna eta erantzuteko gaitasuna.
A new process for producing titanium—a metal that’s increasingly used in aircraft to reduce weight and fuel consumption—is significantly cheaper and less energy-intensive than conventional methods. The technique could lead to titanium being used to reduce the weight of cars, helping automakers meet tightening fuel economy regulations.
The Noocity Growbed is an unique and efficient self-watering and self-fertilizing (optional) gardening system. Easy to assemble and low maintenance, it allows you to plant a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and medicinal herbs anywhere.
How does the system work?
Through the supply tube you fill the water reservoir. Points of capillarity allow plants to obtain the water they need, when they need it, while the ventilation area guarantees perfect oxygenation of the root zone, resulting in stronger, healthier and more resilient plants.
