Converged-infrastructure startup SimpliVity lands $175M with valuation above $1B.

SimpliVity, a startup that sells data center hardware aggregating components typically sold separately — servers and storage boxes — is announcing today that it’s picked up a major funding round totaling $175 million.

The money, which now gives SimplVity a valuation in excess of $1 billion, puts the startup in a position to more seriously challenge publicly traded companies in the converged-infrastructure business, whose fast growth is somewhat reminiscent of the fast rise of server virtualization. That technology lets companies run multiple applications on each physical server and thereby reduce its server footprint.

22 Startups Join First Class of Texas Medical Center’s TMCx Accelerator.

The Texas Medical Center’s accelerator TMCx unveiled the members of its inaugural class: 22 healthIT companies in informatics, medical devices, and biomaterials.

TMC executives hosted a meet-and-greet Monday morning to introduce the startup founders to the media just before the six-month accelerator program begins. “Our job is to make you successful,” says Bobby Robbins, TMC’s CEO. “We think we have a distinctive advantage over other accelerators, sitting in the shadows of the largest medical center in the world.”

Houston Biotech Vapogenix Raises $5.1M for Skin-Numbing Drug.

Vapogenix, a Houston biotech that aims to build a better treatment for skin pain, has completed a $5.1 million Series B funding round—and is already looking at raising additional capital later this year.

The B round was led by Switzerland-based Pamoja Capital and GPG Ventures in Dallas.

Vapogenix is developing a rapidly acting topical analgesic to numb the skin for IV insertions or dermatological procedures, especially those in children. The idea is that volatile anesthetics, which are currently inhaled by patients during general anesthesia, can be marshaled into topical gels and liquids to alleviate pain.

Hardware Trends 2015

As you probably know by now, HAX (aka HAXLR8R) invests in hardware startups. We make sure our portfolio companies build the right thing, build things right, and get to market fast. We see well over a thousand hardware startups per year across categories ranging from robotics, sensors, health tech, smart home and lesser known ones such as sports tech, pet tech, embeddables and more.

This puts us in a unique position to look at larger macro-level trends in hardware and connected devices. How is the hardware startup funding climate changing? What new ecosystem and infrastructure innovations are changing how we prototype and manufacture products? What technologies are triggering new second-level product opportunities?

Commission under pressure over circular economy.

The EU is failing to create a circular economy that boosts resource efficiency and protects the environment, an influential report has found, piling pressure on the European Commission to deliver a strong replacement for the package of waste, incineration, landfill and recycling laws it controversially axed as part of its drive for "better regulation".

The European Environment State and Outlook 2015 report will inform the next five years of EU policymaking and is written by the European Environment Agency (EEA).
