IBM: Practical insights on a decentralized Internet of Things.

Organizations, both private and public, must prepare now to operate in the incomprehensibly immense Internet of Things (IoT) that lies ahead. As the IoT keeps scaling over the next decade, decentralized networks have the potential to reduce infrastructure and maintenance costs to manufacturers. Decentralization also promises increased robustness by removing single points of failure that could exist in traditional centralized networks. By shifting the power in the network from the center to the edges, devices gain greater autonomy, and can become points of transaction and economic value creation for owners and users.

Cars to be fitted with automatic emergency calling from mid-2018.

All cars and light vans in Europe will have to be fitted with automatic emergency calling devices from April 2018 under new rules approved by European Union lawmakers on Tuesday (28 April), which could cut road deaths by 10% a year.

The so-called eCall device will automatically alert the nearest emergency centre in the event of a crash by calling the EU-wide emergency number 112, which will give authorities information such as the exact location and time of the crash and the number of passengers in the vehicle.

The Hackers’ New Weapons: Routers and Printers.

Attacks that take down websites by flooding them with traffic have been popular among computer criminals for years. Traditionally, such assaults are launched using PCs infected with malware. But two security companies say they have seen the emergence of a worrying new tactic: home routers, Internet-connected printers, and even webcams being used to knock targeted sites offline.

In a report released last week, Chinese security company NSFocus said that it had seen a significant increase in the use of networked home and office devices in so-called denial-of-service attacks. NSFocus get its data from hardware it sells to companies to defend against denial-of-service attacks. Its customers include the giant Chinese social networking company Tencent.

This Software-Guided Supersonic Air Blower Sweeps the Rails Clean.

Like an SUV towing a trailer in winter, locomotives can lose their grip on slick rails if they’re pulling too much behind them. Since the weather in mountainous areas can change quickly, railroads play it safe and usually only run trains long enough to pull though all weather conditions.

But shorter trains can get expensive. A single rail car can fit enough grain to bake 258,000 loaves of bread, according to the Association of American Railroads. That’s why GE locomotive engineers developed a software-guided supersonic air blower.
