BluDiagnostics’ Fertility Device Wins WI Business Plan Contest.

For the third year in a row, a life sciences startup took home the top prize at the Wisconsin Governor’s Business Plan Contest.

On Wednesday, Madison-based BluDiagnostics was named the competition’s overall winner and top life sciences company, beating 12 other finalists. All 13 teams presented Tuesday at the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Conference held at Madison’s Alliant Energy Center, an annual two-day business conference hosted by the Wisconsin Technology Council.

Internet of Things creeps into the energy sector.

Europe's electricity sector needs to open up to the Internet of Things, where objects are connected to each other via the World Wide Web, policymakers told a Berlin industry event on Tuesday (2 June).

“We know the development of electricity production and distribution schemes and our electricity grid, including smart meters and smart grids, will closely correspond to the further development of the Internet," said Peter Altmaier, the chief of staff of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and a former environment minister.

First Demonstration of a Surveillance Camera Powered by Ordinary Wi-Fi Broadcasts.

One of the most significant barriers to deploying sensors, cameras, and communicators is the question of power. The task of fitting a security camera on an external wall or a temperature sensor in an attic immediately runs into the question of how to run a power cable to the device or to arrange for batteries to be replaced on a regular basis.

Then there is the Internet of things, the idea that almost every object could be fitted with a chip that broadcasts data such as its location, whether it is full or empty or whether some other parameter such as temperature or pressure is dangerously high or low.

Great things are expected of the Internet of things but only if engineers can solve one potential show-stopper of a question: how to power these numerous tiny machines.

EU utilities trapped in 'coal death spiral'.

The share values of Europe’s biggest utilities have plummeted after the energy companies backed outdated business models that rely on coal, a report published today (5 June) has claimed.

The five largest publicly-listed utilities in the EU collectively lost 100 billion euros or more than a third (37%) of their stock market value from 2008 to 2013, the Carbon Tracker Initiative said.

Germany’s E.ON and RWE, France’s GDF Suez, Électricité de France, and Italy’s Enel are named in the analysis, which found heavily coal-reliant utilities fared worse.

The DARPA Robotics Challenge and the Service Robotics Revolution.

This is an incredibly exciting week for the robotics world! On June 5, the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) finals kick off in Pomona, California, where some of the world’s best in robotics will come together to compete. This contest marks the conclusion of a three-year competition to create a new class of first responder robots. I’ll be there with a few members of the GE robotics team to present at the DRC Expo.
