GE Sells Another Banking Unit to Sharpen Focus on Industrial Businesses.

GE said today it would sell its U.S. Sponsor Finance business for approximately $12 billion to Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. The deal marks another big milestone on GE’s path to sell most of its banking businesses and return to industrials, a strategic shift the company announced in April.

“This announcement is the next step in GE’s transformation to a more focused industrial company,” said Keith Sherin, chairman and CEO of GE Capital. “The sale of Sponsor Finance aligns with our strategy to pair a smaller GE Capital with GE’s long-term industrial growth.”

Houston’s Medical Informatics Gets FDA Nod for Alert System Software.

Medical Informatics, a Houston healthcare IT company, has received FDA clearance to sell the first version of its healthcare data alert system, a major milestone as it works to bring its product to market.

The company is focusing on “alarm management,” with software that aggregates patient data in the hospital gathered from devices like heart rate monitors in real-time in order to alert healthcare providers to an impending issue, say, a heart attack.

“We’re working toward data transformation to provide more actionable information to clinicians rather than raw data,” says Chris Raff, Medical Informatics’ chief financial officer and chief operating officer.

Arcadia Data takes $11.5M to sell a business-intelligence tool for Hadoop.

Startup Arcadia Data is today coming out of stealth mode and revealing its business-intelligence application for analyzing data sitting inside the Hadoop open-source software, which can hold lots of different kinds of data. The startup is also announcing today that it has taken on a $11.5 million funding round.

People can now download Arcadia’s software for Mac and Windows for free. An enterprise version with advanced analytics, security features, and higher performance will ship by the end of the year.

EU food safety watchdog issues cancer warning on acrylamide.

Experts from the European Food Safey Authority (EFSA) have confirmed previous conclusions that acrylamide, a chemical substance formed when heating foods like potato chips, barbecued meat, and bread, potentially increases the risk of developing cancer.

EFSA's Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain (CONTAM) said it stood by a draft opinion, published in July last year, which concluded on an increased risk of cancer caused by acrylamide.

Over the past year, EFSA held a public consultation to improve its scientific opinion on acrylomide, but left its conclusions unchanged, the agency announced on Thursday (4 June).
