Once reserved primarily for prototyping, the technology has quickly proliferated in the life sciences – with applications that range from personalized surgical implants, scaffolding and tissue generation.
LittleBits, a maker of electronic components that both children and designers can snap together to create everything from toy robots to lightweight industrial products, has raised $44.2 million in Series B funding led by DFJ Growth, with managing director Barry Schuler joining the board.
Morgan Stanley, Alternative Investment Partners, Grishin Robotics and Wamda Capital also joined the round, along with earlier backers Foundry Group, True Ventures, VegasTechFund, Two Sigma Ventures and Khosla Ventures.
The financing is a big vote of confidence for the 90-person company, which sells its small, modular electronics in kits of varying sizes and had raised just $15.6 million from investors over four previous rounds.

Matterport has raised $30 million in growth funding from Qualcomm and Singapore’s GIC to expand its virtual reality and augmented reality content creation platform.
Mountain View, Calif.-based Matterport makes a $4,500 Pro Camera that can capture an environment in 360 degrees. It also makes the cloud software to stitch the content into a virtual reality or augmented reality experience. The target market has been realtors looking to show off homes for sale in 3D.
“We have gone through a growth period and we are looking to further fuel that growth,” said Bill Brown, chief executive of Matterport, in an interview with VentureBeat. “We’re making very good progress on our applications platform.”
