Should Babies Have Their Genomes Sequenced?

For 51 years, newborn babies have gotten a heel-prick test in which their blood is screened for dozens of congenital disorders. Routine newborn screening has basically eliminated the risk of death or irreversible brain damage that some of these disorders can pose if they are not identified right away.

Now some researchers in Boston are trying to find out if genomic sequencing at birth would be as successful.

Internet of Things creeps into the energy sector.

Europe's electricity sector needs to open up to the Internet of Things, where objects are connected to each other via the World Wide Web, policymakers told a Berlin industry event on Tuesday (2 June).

“We know the development of electricity production and distribution schemes and our electricity grid, including smart meters and smart grids, will closely correspond to the further development of the Internet," said Peter Altmaier, the chief of staff of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and a former environment minister.

2 Google self-driving car accidents in June show why humans don’t belong behind the wheel.

Google today announced that in June its Lexus autonomous sport-utility vehicles got into two accidents. In both cases, the incidents can be chalked up to human error.

The two new accident reports, which were submitted to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, are amusing — but they suggest that self-driving cars can be less likely to cause accidents than people who are behind the wheel:
