Versal launches a marketplace to help teachers share ways to build better lessons.

In the world of online learning, the formula is pretty well established; someone creates a course and it remains static for all time. It’s not that common to see lessons evolve — but Versal wants to reverse that trend while helping teachers better share their work with others. That’s the reason the open publishing platform is introducing a marketplace to facilitate the transfer of knowledge, so that lessons can be constantly revised and improved.

EU, Vietnam reach deal to boost trade.

The European Union and Vietnam on Tuesday (4 August) reached a free trade agreement after two and a half years of negotiations, the European Commission said.

The deal will remove tariffs on goods traded between the two economies, the Commission said in a statement. The deal covers goods and services, investment and issues such as government procurement. The EU is one of the largest foreign investors in Vietnam. In 2013, EU investors committed a total of more than €500 million in foreign direct investment and remains Vietnam's sixth largest foreign investment partner.

Teach Your Robot to Do the Dishes.

Roomba has a new friend. Researchers have developed a robot that can help clean the kitchen.

In a paper presented at Robotics Science and Systems in Milan in July, scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison describe how they taught a Kinova Mico robot arm to help people do the dishes. The key, apparently, is slowing down and letting human team members take charge. “We want robots to follow our lead, or at least plan their actions with an awareness of ours,” says Bilge Mutlu, associate professor of computer science, psychology, and industrial engineering and an author of the paper.

Vernox Labs Mines Unstructured Data To Help Developers, Contractors Reduce Construction Costs.

Urban construction and development is about as far as you can get from an easily scalable business.

Designs from architects are usually bespoke or one-off. Land-use politics are unpredictable. Individual construction sites are uniquely sized and materials can change from building to building.

So cost overruns are the norm, rather than the exception.

A new Y Combinator-backed company called Vernox Labs is hoping to eliminate some of this unpredictability by using reams of unstructured data from previous projects to help general contractors, designers and project managers figure out how to sidestep common building errors.
