Intellivisit Lands New Customers, Expects New Financing in October.

Intellivisit, the Milwaukee-area virtual health startup that seeks to be the “digital front door” for sick patients wanting to report their symptoms, has signed three Midwestern customers, all of whom will start using the software in October, said founder and CEO Jay Mason.

The company, which changed its name from Elli Health in April, was founded in 2013 and has thus far raised over $2.1 million in seed funding, according to SEC filings.

Samsung launches SmartThings Hub to manage home IoT systems.

With Samsung losing momentum in areas like smartphones and tablets, the company announced today an ambitious bet on the Internet of Things as it seeks to regain momentum.

At the IFA consumer electronics trade show in Berlin, Samsung officials unveiled a SmartThings Hub, which can be used to connect security cameras, smart thermostats, and other smart home gadgets. The hub was developed by SmartThings, the company Samsung acquired last year.

The hub, which costs $99, has a backup battery that lasts 10 hours, and can perform many functions between gadgets locally in the event that Internet connection is lost.

Doctors will soon be able to study 3D-rendered organs in VR before operations.

Doctors currently rely on flat images from CT and MRI scans for pre-op information about patient’s organs. Now, however, health tech startup EchoPixel is planning to use the information garnered from current medical imaging technology to produce 3D virtual reality organs, which doctors can explore and inspect before beginning surgery.

EchoPixel uses the images which are already being gathered during medical imaging processes to create 3D-rendered body parts. These floating masses can then be examined via a VR platform called zSpace. Doctors can rotate and dissect the images of organs, including the brain and the heart, using a stylus. They can even examine a colon via a simulated fly-through.

Transplant Surgeons Revive Hearts After Death.

Transplant surgeons have started using a device that allows them to “reanimate” hearts from people who have recently died, and use the organs to save others.

The “heart in a box” is a wheeled cart with an oxygen supply, a sterile chamber, and tubing to clamp onto a donor heart and keep it fed with blood and nutrients. Doctors say it may extend the time a heart can last outside the body and is letting them recover hearts from donors who haven’t been eligible before.

Robots Lay Three Times as Many Bricks as Construction Workers.

Construction workers on some sites are getting new, non-union help. SAM – short for semi-automated mason – is a robotic bricklayer being used to increase productivity as it works with human masons.

In this human-robot team, the robot is responsible for the more rote tasks: picking up bricks, applying mortar, and placing them in their designated location. A human handles the more nuanced activities, like setting up the worksite, laying bricks in tricky areas, such as corners, and handling aesthetic details, like cleaning up excess mortar.

Censio, Led by Ex-Zipcar CEO, Brings Mobile Tech to Car Insurance.

In the business of connected cars, at least one clear market has emerged: insurance. Today a Boston startup is taking a big step in that market.

Censio, which has been growing quietly next to the Harvard Innovation Lab, said Wednesday it has formed a partnership with Progressive Insurance to develop a mobile app to monitor driving data. The app, called Snapshot, captures information about how people drive—things like mileage, time of day, and braking habits—and rates drivers on safety and usage. Progressive will start testing the app with customers this month, with the goal of rolling out a finished version in 2016.

Data-driven healthcare app can predict an oncoming migraine.

The onset of a migraine can often seem entirely arbitrary, but in fact there are numerous internal and external factors that can cause these debilitating headaches. Migraine Buddy, a data-driven healthcare app from Healint can now predict an oncoming migraine — with 90 percent accuracy — by monitoring the patient and their surroundings, using an algorithm to detect problematic conditions.
