Research links cholesterol to tendonitis and chronic pain.

Chronic pain and tendon inflammation could be directly linked to high cholesterol, according to a study by the University of Canberra. EurActiv Spain reports

The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, found that inflammation caused by the accumulation of cholesterol in the cells of the immune system could be a major factor in tendinitis and chronic pain.

After analysing 1,607 scientific articles on the subject, published between 1973 and 2014, the researchers concluded that people with tendon problems tend to have higher levels of fat (lipids) in their blood.

How One Multinational Conglomerate Radically Changed Its Company Culture and Saved Millions.

GE employs people in 175 countries across a half dozen industries and in more time zones than we can keep track of. So you might think modifying the culture at a company this vast from a this-is-how-we’ve-always-done-it methodology to one that rewards risk taking would take a lifetime.

But it’s taken Janice Semper, who works in GE’s HR department, less than 18 months to significantly modernize the company’s processes. And now she’s evangelizing the radical shifts her innovation team has been able to implement at GE.

Data at the Heart of the Sharing Economy.

In just a few years, the sharing (or access or gig) economy is already casting a shadow over numerous industries. But while the “sharing” aspect is emphasized, data and analytics is critical to making the sharing actually work.

Yes, the basic idea of sharing is appealing and feels right. We’ve heard it promoted since we were toddlers with toys or cookies. As adults, the idea still resonates — why squander our unused resources that someone else can use (and give us money for!), if only we knew how to connect with a person who needs them? Not only are there potential monetary benefits, the idea of reduced waste (of time, natural resources, etc.) is enticing.

The Superconductor That Works at Earth Temperature.

The world of superconductivity is in uproar. Last year, Mikhail Eremets and a couple of pals from the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany, made the extraordinary claim that they had seen hydrogen sulphide superconducting at -70 °C. That’s some 20 degrees hotter than any other material—a huge increase over the current record.
