uBeam Declassifies Secrets To Try To Prove Wireless Power Is Possible.

It must violate the laws of physics. It must be dangerous. It must be impossible. This is what critics have concluded despite not actually knowing the details behind uBeam’s wireless power technology. So rather than let the rumors swirl, today uBeam revealed a bunch of details about how far, how fast, and just plain how it can charge a phone without wires.

Passive Vaccine Storage Device.

Immunizations have become one of the greatest success stories in modern medicine, yet roughly 1.5 million children still die each year from vaccine-preventable diseases. This is due in part to the sensitive nature of vaccines themselves, which spoil if they’re not kept at precise temperatures from manufacture to use.
Immunizations rates are lowest in rural areas, such as Sub-Saharan Africa, where poor infrastructure and unreliable power make reliable, life-saving vaccines hard to come by.

Four fundamentals of workplace automation

The potential of artificial intelligence and advanced robotics to perform tasks once reserved for humans is no longer reserved for spectacular demonstrations by the likes of IBM’s Watson, Rethink Robotics’ Baxter, DeepMind, or Google’s driverless car. Just head to an airport: automated check-in kiosks now dominate many airlines’ ticketing areas. Pilots actively steer aircraft for just three to seven minutes of many flights, with autopilot guiding the rest of the journey. Passport-control processes at some airports can place more emphasis on scanning document bar codes than on observing incoming passengers.

Money Is Piling Into Auto Tech: 2015 Is On Track For A Deal Record, With Corporates Leading.

With tech giants and auto makers involved in a race to deploy self-driving cars, there’s renewed attention on auto tech. A flurry of new auto tech startups have been funded in the last few years, and some notable companies have emerged, including driver-assistance technology firm Mobileye, which raised a $400M round in 2013 ahead of its August 2014 IPO (and currently trades with a market cap over $10B).

With this activity in mind, we used CB Insights data to map out the funding trends in the space. We define auto tech as companies that use software to improve the safety and efficiency in cars, specifically looking at:

A new automated aerial vehicle uses an extremely thin wire tethered to the ground to transmit power and data.

Drones could become useful for surveillance and remote monitoring in many industries, and perhaps one day will even ferry the latest Amazon order to your front door. But there’s one big limiting factor: drones can stay in the air for only so long on a charge.

Not the latest model developed by the Boston-based drone maker CyPhy Works, though. Called Parc, the drone can perform aerial surveillance indefinitely, using a “microfilament” that transmits power and data. Of course the fact that it’s tethered means the drone can’t travel very far. CyPhy Works expects it to be used for reconnaissance or as a communications relay.
