New Wearable Device Can Measure Your Blood Flow.

How much blood is running through your veins, arteries, and capillaries? To find out, you’d typically need to be motionless. Now a new wearable device may soon be able to give you that information even while you’re moving around, doing normal activities. The flexible patch, which conforms to the skin and uses tiny heat sensors to precisely map the blood flow beneath the surface, could give doctors a high-resolution view of this important indicator of health.

A shelf-scanning bot called Tally will help make sure everything is in its place in supermarkets and other retail outlets.

When customers can’t find a product on a shelf it’s an inconvenience. But by some estimates, it adds up to billions of dollars of lost revenue each year for retailers around the world.

A new shelf-scanning robot called Tally could help ensure that customers never leave a store empty-handed. It roams the aisles and automatically records which shelves need to be restocked.

The robot, developed by a startup called Simbe Robotics, is the latest effort to automate some of the more routine work done in millions of warehouses and retail stores. It is also an example of the way robots and AI will increasingly take over parts of people’s jobs rather than replacing them.

Scientists at GE Global Research (GRC) are working with the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a super efficient desalination

Scientists at GE Global Research (GRC) are working with the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a super efficient desalination machine that fits in the palm of the hand.

This innovative solution involves the shrinking of a steam turbine originally designed to generate electricity. It’s also the perfect example of what GE calls the GE Store, the idea that sharing ideas across businesses can quickly lead to breakthroughs.

If successful, the system could reduce the cost of water desalination by as much as 20 percent. That would begin to break down the cost barrier that has prevented more desalination systems from being built.

Pioneering companies in mature economies are learning from emerging market companies a new way to expand their businesses.

In China, the Siemens R&D team has designed a high-end computed tomography (CT scanning) device that’s simple enough for health professionals who are not doctors to use. To develop this, the company pioneered a type of innovation it called “industrial design thinking”: The innovators convened workshops with users of its devices and used craft supplies such as colored paper to build models in order to get a clearer idea of what people wanted.

How Fitbit Dominated the World's Wrists in 2015.

Fitbit is to fitness trackers as Band-Aids are to adhesive bandages. If you see someone wearing a rubbery wristband that takes his vitals and records his sleep patterns, you might automatically refer to the device as a Fitbit--even if it's a different brand.

Through emphasizing software as much as physical products and staying focused on a clear mission, Fitbit has managed to corner a crowded market in which it competes with the likes of Garmin, Jawbone, and Apple.
