Autonomous water-cleaning robot is powered by bacteria.

We’ve seen how autonomous robots — such as these smart ecological management devices — can help protect vulnerable environments. However, the use of autonomous robotics has so far been limited by their need for high energy and inconvenient refueling. Now, Bristol Robotics Laboratory has designed Row-bot, which uses bacteria to self-power as it cleans polluted water.

Amera Is A Wireless Security Device Designed To Detect Motion And More.

Assuming the human eye could see them, what would the wireless signals that we are surrounded by in our homes, businesses and cities look like? Nothing like the streams of ASCII characters depicted in The Matrix, sadly. The reality is more like a sponge, says Cognitive Systems co-founder Taj Manku.

“If you actually see what RF looks like — like, for example, let’s say our eyes could see it it looks very odd. It’s almost like looking into a foam, like looking into a sponge. It’s hard to explain,” he says.

Newron Initiates U.S. Phase II Trial in Patients with Schizophrenia.

Newron Pharmaceuticals S.p.A. (“Newron”), a research and development company focused on novel CNS and pain therapies, announced today the initiation of a U.S. Phase II study with its novel sodium channel blocker, NW-3509, in patients with schizophrenia. NW-3509 is an orally available new chemical entity that specifically targets voltage-gated sodium channels, acting with a unique mechanism of action.

New Circular Economy Package to create fewer jobs than axed bill it replaced.

The European Commission's new Circular Economy Package will create 110,000 fewer jobs in the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland and Italy than the axed bill it has replaced, according to research obtained by EurActiv.

The Green Alliance said the lower targets and less ambitious approach in the new package would create fewer jobs than its 2014 predecessor, which was ditched under the Commission’s drive for “better regulation” and less red tape.

In Germany alone, this will mean spending about €740 million more in unemployment benefits each year by 2030, the London-based environmental think tank added.

Owning the Connected Home: Customer experience as the ultimate differentiator.

Of all the opportunities enabled by the Internet of Things (IoT), one of the most exciting --and most current---is the advent of the Connected Home. The prospect of a “smart home” with solutions such as automated lighting, 24/7 video recording and cloud-based HVAC management has sparked a frenzy of market activity. In the past year, multi-service operators (MSOs), telecommunication companies (telcos), original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), start-ups, and tech heavyweights have all entered the space with competing and complementary offerings. With so many players, how can any one company differentiate itself from the pack and own the home? Which specific strategies should companies adopt to ensure long-term success?

Connected Car Study 2015: Racing ahead with autonomous cars and digital innovation.

In 2015, our annual study of “connected car” technologies shows innovation racing ahead as auto makers unveil new digital services and autonomous driving features. The connected car is an automobile designed with direct access to the Internet, enabling automated links to all other connected objects, including smartphones, tracking devices, traffic lights, other motor vehicles — and even home appliances. Volkswagen and Daimler led the industry in a year that saw high general levels of innovation in infotainment systems and safety-assistance technology. We foresee annual sales of connected car technologies tripling to €122.6 billion by 2021.

Supply Chain Excellence Study.

The value chain forms the backbone of every manufacturing firm and is key to their business success. It encompasses all activities – from Plan and Source to Make and Deliver. Roland Berger experts have taken a closer look at the value chains in various industry sectors for their latest study. Companies find themselves particularly challenged by rising customer demands in respect of reliability, flexibility and costs combined with a constantly changing operating environment.

The study answers a number of key questions to help businesses survive in this competitive arena and draw the right conclusions for their own value chain:

3D-Printing Methods: Which One Is Right for Your Project?

Even in its infancy, 3D printing has made designers take notice, not least because of its promise to transform industries and remake manufacturing. Industry watchers even called the process “Wal-Mart in your hands” due to its range and potential. Fashion, food, aeronautics, medicine, construction, device manufacturing—this technology isn’t just changing how certain things are made; it’s changing how things are made in general. This hype has primed the market for rapid growth, with sales of 3D-printing machines predicted to grow 500 percent in five years.
