Study: ‘Fat tax’ made Denmark healthier.

The short-lived Danish levy on fatty foods was heavily criticised when it was first introduced in October 2011. But research shows that the fat tax achieved its objective in changing Danish grocery shopping habits, and saving lives.

A new research collaboration between Oxford University and Copenhagen University found that contrary to public belief, the Danes bought 4% less saturated fat, more vegetables and more salty products, while the fat tax was in force between October 2011 and January 2013.

The study was published by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Your Next Board Member Should Be a Geek: Why companies need directors with technological expertise.

Imagine that you were a major investor in a leading company, and its board of directors had no members with independent, world-class financial expertise. Who would look after your interests? You could probably coach the directors to ask good questions, but they would lack the competence to judge the answers. The board would not be able to engage management in robust conversations about the complexities of capital structure, mergers and acquisitions, financial accounting, reporting, regulatory compliance, or risk management. Most investors and regulators would deem such a board unfit to carry out its fiduciary guidance and governance responsibilities.

Heads Up: New Technologies Address Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a growing health concern in many occupations and disciplines. From amateur and professional athletes to soldiers and first responders, more and more people worldwide are at risk of sustaining TBIs and suffering potentially debilitating long-term effects.

TBIs can happen anywhere, from battlefields to sports arenas, at home or on the road. Among both children and adults, falls are the leading cause of these impacts to the head, followed by blunt trauma, car crashes, and assaults.

China Is Building a Robot Army of Model Workers.

Inside a large, windowless room in an electronics factory in south Shanghai, about 15 workers are eyeing a small robot arm with frustration. Near the end of the production line where optical networking equipment is being packed into boxes for shipping, the robot sits motionless.

“The system is down,” explains Nie Juan, a woman in her early 20s who is responsible for quality control. Her team has been testing the robot for the past week. The machine is meant to place stickers on the boxes containing new routers, and it seemed to have mastered the task quite nicely. But then it suddenly stopped working. “The robot does save labor,” Nie tells me, her brow furrowed, “but it is difficult to maintain.”

Is There a Fountain of Youth in Our DNA?

Nonie Hickle’s hair is coal-dark. Her husband, Vincent, marvels at it. He points to it and says, “No gray!” Nonie’s a little amazed too; she thinks it’s kind of spooky. After all, she’s 91 years old.

Statistically speaking, Hickle, who lives in San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood, should be sick. She ought to have cardiovascular disease, cancer, or heart failure. Yet she doesn’t have any of those things. True, her hearing has been going bad over the past several years. And she has a touch, just a touch, of high blood pressure. But if you were to look at this 4'11" Korean-American nonagenarian, you wouldn’t peg her at a day over 70.
